Wheel bearings... - Click HERE for Original Thread

It's been quite a while since I posted anything since I have made it 43,300 basically trouble free miles on my 03...that is until about July 1st. The rear a/c quit, drivers door grab delaminated, seat click started on right turns (loud, and felt it shift) and then a faint growl started to appear around 30-40mph. At first I thought it was time to rotate my relatively new Michelins (7K miles) so off to Costco I went (they always use a torque wrench). The noise abated slightly but quickly got worse over the next week until it became a steady drone, and then I started to feel it in the steering wheel. Alignment is dead on and tire balance is perfect...in fact 2 tires have no weights! I haven't had any brake work done other than the shims shortly after buying it. Of course I started to search this (amazing!) site and came across various references and I still couldn't decide if it was a tranny prop shaft or front wheel bearing. The dealer pulled the wheels and quickly realized the right front bearing was shot and the left had play as well. They have seen others but 'not many'...This REALLY amazed me...I have to believe a lot of other MDX's are going to suffer this and I bet they used bearings from a lighter vehicle to keep the cost down...or sourced them from someone that isn't heat treating them enough. At least all the ailments are cured for now and hopefully will not return.

Thanks for taking the time to write up your analysis. You have to wonder if this is a one time thing, or representative of a more sinister defect. One wheel bearing I'll buy, but when both bearings show the same problem, that's another problem altogether.

Forewarned is forearmed. Thanks again, BOCAMDX!

It is entirely possible that 2 bearings could go bad, was this a warranty repair, if so maybe the dealer was "helping you out" by replacing both for you, so you would not have one fail outside of warranty. Also bearings can fail for several reasons, sliding sideways into curbs even a "light hit can cause slight damage that will only manifest itself after many more miles go on. It could also be a bad batch from a supplier it which case 2 going at the same time does make sense
