I have looked into the following extended warranties for my new 06 X.
1. dealer offered united auto care platinum plan
2. acura care
3. warrantydirect.com LuxuryCare MBI (this one also provides wear and tear coverage)
Do any of you have any experience with any of the above ?
If not, what other extended warranty have you used and been happy with ?
Also, based on my research, the consensus seems to be that it is better to buy extended warranty now then after mfg warranty runs out - since it doesnt save money usually. Is that what your experience has also been ?
Thanks.

| Why don't you try Tim at hondacuraworld (one of the site sponsors)? It's an AcuraCare warranty. |

| I agree with DJ. I my opinion, I would stick with the Acura warranty. I've had personal experience with aftermarket warranties from third parties, and it was not good - the company went bankrupt and I was left holding the bag. I am sure there are good eggs and bad eggs in the third party warrany market, but by going with the Acura warranty, you can count on it being there when you need it. In addition, you will avoid the hassle of having to deal with an "outsider" each time you need a repair. |

i am in agreement......when in doubt, stick with Acura Care. We offer both becasue we "have to". United Care is a good warranty and they cover good things, but you can run into some problems if you end up needing to use it outside of a UNited Auto dealer becasue the dealer just does not WANT to use it even if it works there if that makes sense.
Rule of thumb on Warranties...........only buy them from dealers, and make sure the company is LARGE. If you are getting some out of control screaming deal on a warrnaty for a price that makes no sense at all and is from a company that you have not heard of, then there is a good chance that they will go bankrupt. These warranties really do pay out....often.....and when they do not charge enough in the begininning, they simply do not have enough money to cover all the claims and that is what causes the problem.
Also..only buy them if you are SURE you are going to keep you car into the 70,000 + mileage range. It is at this time when they start to pay out. If you do not have these ownership habits, then they are a true waste of money.
A lotof people say that you should never buy them. From experience, I recommend them to family and friends if their ownership plan fits. I see them pay out all the time on new CD Stereos that jam (about $900 for a new ACura Stereo), POwer Window regulatars, diagnostic computers..things along those lines. It is rare that these come into play with major repairs....that's why you buy an ACura...they are well built cars and "major" repairs are rare. Sure, if one happens and you have the Acura Care, you tap dance in and out of the dealership feeling EXTREMELY rewarded, but like I Said, it is the small stuff that they really are used for.
Just like car insurance...it is all it is. You pay for so you are guaranteed that your car willnever cost you more than "X" amount of $'s during your ownership for repairs. |

Knowing your vehicle's weaknesses should be part of your decision.
If you had an earlier MDX, drivetrain coverage might be a larger consideration.
There are a few cars around that have very solid drivetrains, but a myriad of electrical or body hardware problems.
So in your search you want to tailor it to the car, as much as possible.
But if you go 'AcuraCare' all major systems will be covered. You will not likely get coverage if a door handle falls off, but the real expensive electronic AND mechanical systems that could fail would be covered, including power seats and navigation, to mention only a couple.
You are not obligated to buy one from your selling dealer, and Tim certainly offers them at very competitive prices.
Plus the beauty of not waiting for remibursements or the worry of components being replaced with substandard parts. |
