I have a flat tire on my 2003 MDX. It is on the corner thread of the front passenger side tire. It was found when the dealear was doing a tire roatation and said that this cannot be repaired and I need to replace my tire. He quoted ~$270 for the tire and other things.

I did not get it with him and have been looking to buy outside. But in the meantime I heard that on a AWD vehicles you should not change just one tire, but have to replace all the 4 tires lest you ruin the AWD transmission.

Now I am not sure if I have to go for all 4 new ones or just get a new one and rotate the tires around. The tires are in very good shape and the leak is very slow, the pressure loss is very negligible overnight.

Also I do not have a FSS.

How many miles on the tires and what make and model of tires?

$270.00 sounds VERY high.

Changing only one tire will have no effect of AWD. HOwever, all of the tires should be of the same type.

Call/go see a reputable tire dealer near you and get there opinion. Do not let them think that you are a novice.

How many miles are on the tires? If it is relatively new, then replacing one would not require the others to be replaced.

If it is an older tire, I would suggest at least replacing the two wheels on the same axle.

The dealer's price on tires is alway ridiculously high. They are probably also not the best in figuring out if a tire is repairable.

I would suggest taking the car by a professional tire shop for repair. If they cannot repair, then have them quote you their best price on replacing two tires. I'll bet it is pretty close to the dealer's price for one tire (eg you should be able to get two GoodYear Integrities, with mounting and roation for close to $200.)

Note: I personally do not like mixing tire brand/makes on my cars. If you are going to try and keep two of the four tires, relace with the same brand/make.

G. Colton -> Thanks for the response. I have around 38K miles on the tires. And I have Michellin Cross Terrain as all my 4 wheels.

Ceenit -> I have 38K miles on the tires. And I will take it to the professional tire repair people and see what they say.

the MDX is not AWD, it is front wheel drive.

the rear wheels only kick in when the front lose traction.

subaru is AWD, all wheels turn all the time

Not quite true. THe rears kick in on acceleration, especially at slow speeds. It is indeed All Wheel Drive, although not full time AWD.

Don't get the tire changed at the dealer - go to a professional tire shop and make sure you compare prices. I got discount tire near my house to match sears's price so the total was around 200 bucks for 1 Mich. Xterran (Wanted to keep all 4 tires identical because the other 3 tires were so new)

I got my Michellin Cross Terrains at Sam's Club for 137.95 each. I changed two at a time.

Subaru sucks, don't ever compare MDX with that.
Halgsr
is was not a comparison to subaru at all, because until the MDX comes with SH-AWD (2007) the subaru will always have a superior AWD system.
csmeance
The acura mdx will have SH-AWD, theres the link
