i just used the precedure here on the board to change out my hvac air filter thinking it was the source of the musty, mildewy smell coming from my a/c. i put in a brand new filter, but still no good. when i first turn on the a/c, i get the same smell. goes away after a few minutes.
someone mentioned spraying something directly onto the evaporator coils. anyone know what that stuff is?

Condensatioin in your AC causes this. You have MELDEW in your system. Very common so don't panic. You didn't have to change those Allergen filters either...
Go to your local Napa or car shop. Tell them of the nasty smell in the cabin from the AC. They sell some stuff I have in my garage to rid that. Cheap easy fix.....:1: :1:

I think that's a Honda problem, because our 1993 Accord had that, as well as the 2002 Civic; so far- not yet on the MDX.

The Accord and the Civic, both had a faint urine smell for the first minute or two after you fire up the AC.

If there's one area in automobile manufacturing that the Japanese can take more lessons from the American's, is in the area of HVAC. Our Nissan's & Honda's never cooled or heated as efficiently or as effectively as their American counterparts, there was never an AC odor and when it comes to defogging and defrosting, the gap widens even more.

I haven't owned a German (European) car yet... Yet.
But, I can imagine given the winters over there, they should have hellacious heating systems, even if the AC is lacking (which I believe would be a safe bet, given their mild summers).

Another excellent point from a previous post by renov8r:

Bad smells mean either a leak, or a plugged A/C condensate drain -- neither of which should go unfixed.

Mold can get outa hand in the A/C system and cause you to get sick! It can also (in extreme cases) get under the carpet & in the seats and make the vehicle unsellable.

Leaks are the say way -- whether leaking fluids or leaking rain water it will get worse over time & ruin the vehicle.

Call the dealer and DO NOT let 'em brush you off with a spritz of Lysol -- in fact I would be sure that the service writer puts a note on your ticket to the effect of "Customer is allergic to many air fresheners DO NOT SPRAY IN VEHICLE OR A/C DUCT SYSTEM" so that they HAVE to find the source & fix it!

IMHO I wouldn't want to spray something in the vents that just covers the odor. You don't have the year of your vehicle listed but if it's still under warranty I'd follow the excellent advise above.

Big-
You don't have a Honda problem; you have a mouse problem. If your Accord and Civic smelled like pee, that's a really good indicator that you had mice living in them. It's surprisingly common- nice warm location, protected, and plenty of nesting material in the insulation.
