It's only supposed to turn 'off' when someone *is* sitting there but doesn't meet the threshold criteria. If she's a small thing (under 100 lbs) she'd be light enough where it will turn itself off. Likewise if she leans against the door or side of the seat that will also trigger the 'off' light. This is not a malfunction--this is what it is supposed to do, to prevent the side air bag from detonating when a small child/person is too close to it. |

The weight threshold for the passenger front airbag deployment is 65 lbs (+/- 2 lbs), about the average weight of a 10-12 year old kid. If the weight sensors in the front passenger seat senses a weight less than that, the "Passenger Airbag Off" light will illuminate, and the passenger front airbag will deactivate. That light will also illuminate for a short time when the ignition is turned on. That's a normal self test feature.
There is another set of sensors that control the passenger SIDE airbag. If the weight sensors detect a very light weight in the seat (grocery bag, or briefcase, for example), or if the OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System) senses that the passenger is leaning towards the passenger side airbag, the passenger side airbag will deactivate, and the "Side Airbag Off" amber light will illuminate in the driver's right cluster.
Then there's the side curtain airbag system.......
Three separate systems designed to keep you nice and cozy.
If the "Passenger Airbag Off" light (on Center Panel) is illuminated when your wife is sitting in the passenger seat (assuming she weighs more than about 65 lbs), there might be a problem. The weight sensors in the passenger's seat can be recalibrated, btw.
Something sounds fishy. Is the dealer nearby? |

Wait a second folks. What he descibes is correct. The light only comes on at start up temporarily or if something too light is in the seat. When his wife is sitting in the passenger seat the indicator should be off.....Did I miss something? |

| That's how it's suppose to work. If someone (over 65 lbs) sits in the passenger seat, all lights should be extinguished, meaning the system is active. |

Unless they're not sitting correctly. You can be 200 lbs but if you lean against the door (like you were sleeping), the light will come on.
If the main SRS light is not on and she's sitting correctly, I'd be suspect of the OPDS sensor, which was subject to that recall. |
