I am getting to the date where I need to decide whether to add the Navi. option on my ordered 2002 model

I need some feedback from both sides of the issue from owners who opted for/against adding this option

and whether you now agree with your choice and would you make the same decision again and why?

Thanks is advance :)

Rogdude, try the search function, I think there's a post or two on this topic. (You obviously haven't met Crem yet, you will... :))

We got the touring without the Nav and we've not missed it after 14K miles. We've bought lots of maps and we have not come close to spending the 2K that the nav costs.

Good luck

rogmandude,

I hadn't specifically requested navigation because most of this
wild country of the pac northwest isn't mapped (but hopefully
soon will be). When the first available vehicle happened to be
so equipped I grabbed it just to be in possession of an MDX.
We have found, in the short time we have owned the X, that the
navigation system is truly fun and eventually will become very
useful. The people that look at and admire the vehicle always
focus their attention on navi - it draws oohs and aahs.

I don't know where you are located so cannot evaluate the
immediate usefulness for your local travel. Needless to say,
those who have made long trips will attest to the great utility
of the navigation feature. These issues aside, the bottom line
would seem to be one's ability or willingness to spend the 2k.
If you won't lose sleep over the cost or there aren't other
high priorities, I would say go for it. No question, you will enjoy!

Here you go Rog, search away!

BTW - I found this by doing a site search on Alpine, you might want to try that - lots of interesting discussion.

Hey There,

I havent gotten my mdx yet, but I'm getting it with the Navi... I also have a GPS companion to my Handspring Visor. My reasoning for getting both was:

1-on a portable, you usually have to load the maps you need ahead of time.
2-I can take the portable out of the car. but...

3-the navi on the MDX is just better than anything else... (in terms of coverage, etc... the locations and other info in the DVD is just a lot more than you'll get on a portable)

Get both!!!

Ok, so that wasnt much help... but I did convince my wife I needed both :)

I've got Delorme's Earthmate for my Palm III, it's only natural..., you can't take your car everywhere.

BTW, I connected the Earthmate to my laptop on a plane one time - not only does it give the plane's altitude and airspeed, but when the pilot pointed out that we were flying over Albany, I could point out to the other passengers that he was off by about 30 miles. It was cool.

We thought it was an expensive option, but cool. In fact when we heard the price I stated what MB said, it will buy a lot of maps. We don't very often find ourselves in situations where I don't know where we are or need help. Maybe it is our little part of the world (NE Ohio, NW Pa). Actually if I need to know or need help on getting somewhere in advance I use the mapping web sites on the internet. Unless you live in or around a large metropolitan area I think you would "play" with it more than you would use or need it. You wanted our 2 cents.:)

Good luck

I played with the Nav off an on for about a week, and was mildly impressed, but it was in Idaho where the map coverage was pretty sparse. With that in mind, I just don't feel that an electronic map is worth that much money. My MDX doesn't have the Nav system and I don't miss it at all. The consensus seems to be that it's a nice system and if you can afford it, get it. Well, even if you can afford it, I would strongly recommend putting $2000 dollars into something more useful such as an extended warranty, gas, beer, or pornography.

We love our navi and even have a pet name for the female voice. (Previous thread several months ago about that) It's much more than just a bunch of maps. It has a mini yellow pages in it's database as well so you can look up businesses by category, name, phone number. We've found that very helpful when in an unfamiliar area. We were in Sausolito (just off the Golden Gate Bridge north of SF) a couple of weeks ago and felt like going to an Italian restaurant. "June" found one for us quickly and it turned out to be pretty tasty! I was at the post office a few months ago and realized I forgot to address my package at home. I looked up the business that my friend works at halfway across the country and called him to get his home address. That was a real time-saver for me. Now I'm thinking about trading in our other car to get a new one with Navi.

If you're leasing, DON'T get the Nav! You'll get hook with it that you'll definitely have a terrible withdrawal syndrome once it's time for you to return your MDX.

Now, if you're purchasing your MDX, think whether you're willing to shell out an additional $2K for the system or not. Also remember that that Nav will be used exclusively by your MDX and won't be portable to any other vehicle you may have. My suggestion is to get an after-market navigational system instead.

The most useful experience I've had with the Navi was one night when we were grilling. The "chef" grabbed some metal tongs to turn some chicken or steak and got burned. He didn't think it was too bad and we went ahead and ate. But as it got later the pain got worse. Bad enough for him to say, let's go see a pharmacist. It was after 9pm. We tried driving to several of our "local" drugstore, but they were closed. Finally, we pulled over and I looked up pharmacies on the Navi and started calling until I found one that was open for another 20 minutes. Then I selected it and away we went.

Sure, if I had thought to grab the yellow pages before we left we could have done the same thing, but we would still have had to pull out some maps. And yes, if we'd had local maps with us we could have probably eventually found it. Maybe even before it closed.

That doesn't happen everday (thank God), but I stil use my Navi when I go to clients and don't know the area and need a restaurant, atm, etc.

So I guess it comes down to how much you travel in areas that you don't know the streets and stuff on the streets.

If you have no problem parting with the extra $2000, I would get it. I test drove a model with it and it is VERY cool. But I opted to get the Garmin Talking StreetPilot III GPS from Amazon.com instead. I haven't ordered it yet, but will do soon. It is now only $899.99 with free shipping.

well I cant say I would need the Navi to find a pharmacist..I am married to one..lol..:D

I am buying this vehicle..and I am leaning toward putting my money toward an extended warranty and buying a cheaper after-market handheld navigation system..$2000 seems a bit steep to me at least

I like mine a whole LOT! The other day I needed and ATM and BAM! there it was on the screen. Resturaunts, Gas. It is worth it to me. I guess it all depends where you live and if you get out much. If it doesn't cover where you live and you do 90% of your driving there then it might not be worth the money. It is up to you in the end. I did it and would do it !

I like the Navi for the following reasons:

1. Easier to find places at night. No need to look for street signs and addresses in the dark, if you can find them.

2. In inclement weather like rain, snow or haevy fog.

3. find places (restaurant & type, parks, public places, even residences with phone number when you are on the road) with vague directions.

4. Go off road or camping or places not covered by the built in maps. The breadcrupms will telkl you how to retrace it, very useful in camping in my cases.

5. Find address of kids' friends/visit location when dropping them at new neighborhood by pressing the locator while in front of the house and have the Navi guide you back out.

6. Less time on cell phone for directions while trying to reach destinatiomn and not getting lost when trying to reverse the process.

7. Voice direction.

8. Auto re-route if you prefer some know short cut or preferred corner/street.

9. Large and bright display screen.

10. Integration to the car.

11. I am tired of typing :)

I used it a lot and whenever I can. Get it if you can afford.

:D
