My cheap Dell 5.1 speaker system is breaking down. There is a lot of hissing/popping from the speakers... did some research and it seems like it's due to the cheap amplifier.
So now I'm looking for replacement speakers... preferably in the $100 range. I'm looking at either a 2.1 speaker system or just a 2 speaker system (would be nice to bring along when travelling).
Any recommendations? |

I'd recommend the Cambridge Soundworks Microworks II. I've had mine for 8 years and they sound great! Mine are the original Microworks that set the standard before Klipsch and Logitech got into the game of hi-end PC speakers.

The closest thing to a high-end computer speaker that I know of are the Swans M-200s (they're far from portable). Swans is best known for manufacturing the modestly-priced (<$2500 for a 5.1 setup) Diva line of home theater speakers which are much loved over at avsforum.com. They also have a 5.1 setup for computers.

Don't let the fact that NewEgg sells these scare you off. These are better speakers than you can get at any large retailer (BB, CC, etc.) - you'd have to go to a high-end retailer to find something substantially better. |

| As long as you have a good (not cheap) Sound Blaster sound card, any moderate $50 3-speakers on sale would suffice your entertainment needs. |
