replacing the timing belt - Click HERE for Original Thread

I bought a used 2001 X with 93000 kms on it. The service manual recommends replacing the timing belt once it hits around 100,000 kms if it was driven in cold climate and if it was used to haul something heavy. If not, the belt should be replaced at 160,000 kms. Here is the situation. I bought my X with a hitch which could have been used to haul something heavy( I'm guessing) and I later found out it came from Toronto, Canada where the winter drops to -30 degrees celsius. Don't know if should replace the belt at 100 k or 160 k. Any opinion guys?

Do whatever gives you peace of mind if you can afford it. It's one of the costlier things to replace if done at a dealer and about $150 if you DIY, with the water pump.

I would replace it now. If the belt breaks, timing will go off and your valves will impact your pistons & cost you a lot more money to fix.

As far as fixing it yourself, I would not attempt it. It's a pretty big job & very overwhelming to somebody even with a little bit of mechanical background.
