New vs. Demo - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi everyone,
Potential new MDX owner here. I'm looking at a 2006 with Navi and maybe RES. I went to cars.com and sent some requests out to surrounding dealers. One of them shot back an offer on a demo. He said it has 4,800 miles. The price was about $4,000 less than a new one. We can afford the new one, but saving $4,000 has some appeal.

So what's the deal on demos? Are they a decent deal? What's a good price for an MDX with touring, navi and RES in Iowa?

Anything else a prospective buyer should know?

When you say $4000 less than new is that off MSRP? Or can you get this for around 34K? I always think of demos as used cars with many owners. You never know how it was driven for those 4800 miles. Would you be the original title holder or not?

I would think you could get a fairly decent deal in IA but you may have to get quotes from Omaha, KC or MPLS to see if they can beat it. Good luck!

You should be able to buy a MDX with NAV and RES brand new for around $38,000 right now. This includes the $2500 dealer cash that is available.

"Demos" are not titled but the deals are too good on brand new X's right now!

$4000 less than the other quotes, not MSRP. The demo quote was $35,500.

There's only one Acura dealer in Iowa, and he knows it, so he doesn't deal much. I sent requests out to the dealers in KC and MPLS.

The offers I'm getting for new are around $37,000 for Navi and $39,450 for Navi and RES.

If I could get one with Navi and RES for $38,000 I'd jump on it. I haven't gotten replies back from all the dealers yet, so I'll see how they go. I'm not very good at haggling, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to get them down to $38k or not.

Whenever I try a demo, I gun the engine and slam the brakes.

Now, how many other potential buyers have done that. . .

A "DEMO" is usually driven by a General Manager or Sales Manager...not the public, so you are dealing with a car that has been driven most likely like a normal peron like yourself would drive the car. Our insurance in most dealerships for demos is pretty servere. If we get in accidents, we are usually held responsible for the deductable, and for costs, those deductables are usually really high. For our store, $10,000. Soooooooo........we tend to be careful when driving these cars!!!

Now.....the other Demo, is the one that IS used for Demos for customers. You can tell if this is one of them by looking at the MSRP. It will say on it...."Demonstrator..Not For Sale". These are extra cars for dealers to use so we do not mile up stock units. If memory serves though, these are NOT available in the MDX any longer, so you are most likely getting a Demo from a GM.

ASK about accessories. USually they have accessories and you will not know about till you get there if it is a "crooked dealer" that plays by the old tricks of the trade. they will then try to bump your price.

All that being said...if the price quotes you quoted above are indeed accurate...it sounds like you are getting a good deal on the Demo and I would not be that scared of it at all......just go look at it and make sure it is okay..no scrathes, road damage..you know the drills. Only you can decide how much 4500 miles is worth to you...cause the dealer OWNS THAT DEMO FOR THE SAME PRICE AS ALL THE OTHER BRAND NEW UNITS as we are NOT allowed to write down the values of the Demos. We rely on people falling into the NEw Car Ether and coming in that has not done the homework you guys have and selling it to them for the same price you could get a brandc new one for...butin your case, they are making an exception to that rule it appears.

I have bought demonstrators in the past and have found them to be good deals. They are essentially new vehicles with miles. The miles detract from your warranty if you are a driver that tends to overrun warranty miles.

Good driving.

Good to know. I haven't talked to the guy yet, so I'll ask him just what "demo" means. I figured I'd talk to you guys first and educate myself a little in case he tries anything.

I've run into that. One dealer was telling me about all the great things they throw in for free. The one he failed to mention was a $299 "administrative fee." I don't see him getting any of my money.

The new car ether is strong, I'll admit. These vehicles are all around 200 miles away, so I'm not going to take the drive and inspect them unless I'm serious about buying one.

Thanks very much for the information.

Another thing to consider (all other things being equal) is how long you plan on keeping the MDX.

If you intend to keep it for 6-10 years or longer, than depreciation will not be that much of a factor for you, and a brand new MDX will make more sense. If, however, you will be trading it in a few years, than a demo at $4,000 discount will be a better deal because someone else (in this case, the dealer) already took a significant depreciation hit. You're still getting an almost-new car at a significant discount.

So, in my opinion, if you plan on keeping the MDX less than 5 years - buy a demo, and if plan on holding on to it longer than that, then go for the new one.
