A/C Clicking Noise - Click HERE for Original Thread

The A/C in our 2001 Base MDX makes a rapid clicking sound when the outside temperatire is close to the temp setting on the unit.

It sounds as if the system is trying to figure out which direction to send the air, as the sound is not unlike what you'd hear from a plastic piece that flips back and forth between two lines. The only way to make it stop is to turn off the system and select the recirculate setting.

I had the dealership look at it and, of course, they could not reproduce the sound.

They did, however, accidently disconnect the rear A/C unit. So nice of them.

I searched the archives for info on this but could not find an answer.

Is the clicking noise inside the vehicle or under the hood?
ghm2112
Inside.

It drives us crazy.
ocuriel
Maybe an air door actuator????

Can you expand on why that would only happen when the outside temp and A/C unit set temp are similar?

Thanks.
eRauL
are you sure it's inside? I'm having the same problem. I can hear it from the inside, but I can hear it more clear and loudly from the front bumper.
I have not yet deduced that it was related with the temperature-outside vs ac-set-temperature.
If you are right about that, could it be the thermostat that control the blower?

well, in your dash, there are 3 air doors that are controlled by actuators.

1 controls the fresh air/circulate door
1 controls the mode door
& the other controls the air mix door

outside temp reading really has nothing to do with the operation of a/c. a/c works off the cabin temp.

Let me think about it a little more & i'll try to explain it better.

I have an 01 mdx and had this same exact problem. The problem drove me crazy and on 3 diff. trips to the dealer they couldn't reproduce it. Finally at about 56,000 miles, I was there for some kind of service or checkup and it clicked while I was waiting in the service lane. I grabbed the service rep and make him listen. They finally heard it and told me the it was something called the "blendor" or something similar. Whatever it was, the noise came from getting stuck trying to open or close. Since I had mentioned it before, they took care of it for free even though it was past 50k. If you need me to, I can check my receipts later and let you know what it was they changed exactly.

Slash007:

Thanks. Your email combined with the others assures me that we are talking about the same thing. What I hear sounds exactly like what you described.

If you get a chance, it would be great to get info from the receipts. I'd like to give the technicians as much detail as possible. I need to bring it in for its 82.5K mile service soon and have them straighten this out at that time.

Has the problem re-appeared since the repair?

Thanks!

Did you ever get your air-con clicking noise fixed? I strongly believe I have the same problem as what you described.

What exactly did they changed to fix the problem and how much does it cost?

Thanks
Budgewood
I have the same noise in my 2001 MDX. I can see that it is the mechnism that controls the air mix. I don't know if it is the motor or some other component. It would be great if you could post how the dealer fixed yours. Thanks
jimmy_1971
I hear the same noise in my AC unit. Anyone know the cost and what component was replaced? I just purchased my 2001 MDX. I'm also having transmission problems. Guess I should've read this newsgroup before buying my car. ;-(.

I have recently fixed the clicking noise coming from under the dash in my 2001 MDX. I ordered the motor that controls the air mix in the ventilation system and installed it yesterday. No more clicking. It was actually a pretty easy fix once I got the part. Took about 30 minutes. Cost was about $125 for the part and my labor was free.

Budgewood:
Can you provide the part number of the motor you replaced? I had the same A/C clicking noise. There is a motor right under the left side of glove compartment that when I pushed its motor spindle the clicking noise disappeared. I suspect this is the same motor that you replaced. How long does it takes you to replace the motor?

Thanks!

If you go to the Acura website at acura.com you can order the part through the "estore". On the website go to Acura Store at the bottom right. I had gotten a quote from the dealer and the part was about $235 but I ordered it through the "estore" for $129.
They will ship the part to the dealer nearest you or ship it to your house. The website will take you through the process of selecting parts. Go to Elec./Exhaust/Heater and then to Heater unit and it will show you a picture of all the parts to the heater. The part you want is #6 in that picture (Motor Assembly, Air Mix). Also be sure to order part #7 in the picture which is the Rod Holder that is required because you will damage the original one when installing the
new motor.

The motor is pretty easy to install.
It is helpful to have a small mirror to help you see what your
doing. It is a little hard to get to.
1. Remove the panel that is along the bottom of the center console and it is easier to get to the motor.
2. Disconnect the electrical connection which just pulls out.
3. Remove the screw that secures the white holder that holds the
wire controller. The wire is encased in a blue tube.
4. Remove the three screws that hold the motor in. At this point the
motor and assembly should be hanging free. Slip off the wire that
is connected to the white mechanism and pull the whole assembly
out.
5. At this point you will remove the rod from the white mechanism
and insert the new rod using the rod holder that you ordered.
6. Just put everything back in the reverse order and you should
be "click free"

Hope it all works. It is actually pretty easy and took only about
30 or 40 minutes.
If you need more help let me know. God Bless.

Thanks! I found the website and was able to get to the part list. My MDX is 2003 and the Motor Assy, Air Mix is priced at $263. It is the estore and it keep forcing me to select a local dealer in my area. For some reason I am not able to get the $125 price. Do I have to go to a special site to get the $125 deal? Here is the website I found the parts:

I just went to the website at Acura.com and ordered the part. I think it was about $129 for the motor. I don't know if it makes any difference that you are going through a Honda dealer. I ordered my through Acura of Memphis. They shipped the part to the Memphis dealer and the dealer shipped it to me. It took about a week to get the part.

If it keeps sending you to the local dealer, you might try typing in a different zip code and go through an Acura dealer. Since they ship they part to you it shouldn't matter which dealer you go through.
Good luck.

Hi Budgewood,
This morning I replaced the air-mix motor assembly myself. Took me about 1/2 an hour. Thank to you for the detail instruction. It has more detail and useful than the MDX repair manual that I have.

BTW for the 2003 MDX, step 3 (the wire controller) of your instruction is not required. In fact the air-mix motor assembly for the 2003 MDX indeed cost more than twice the price for the 2001 MDX's

I ended up buying the new motor assembly directly from my dealer. They have it in stock. I did ask them how much it will cost for them to replace it. They charge $85 for the labor. Probably take them 15 minutes to replace it.

Thanks again for sharing your resolution and for the replacement instruction. Now my A/C is click-free! Have a Happy New Year.
Budgewood
Hi Stoh, I'm glad you had success in eliminating the click in your X. It feels good to be able to do the maintenance yourself and save $85, I know.

My whole ventilation system seems to operate more efficiently and correctly since I repaired mine.

God's blessings and I hope you have a prosperous New Year.

I got the new part installed by myself a few weeks ago. Yesterday I opened the old one and found out that the root cause of this problem is that the grease around the sprocket inside smears over the thick film contact surface. This prevents the metal brush from having a good contact with the surface. This is also why if you push the spindle the noise will go away because that makes the contact solid. You can just open the box, clean the surface and put things back as before. This will save you $160 if it is done right ( unforturnatelly I installed the new part before I figure this out ).
