We just got a letter from the 'car acquisitions dept' yesterday. It says in part:

"We need to acquire several pre-owned 2003 Acuras by August 21, 2006. You have been identified as an owner of one of these vehicles and our new car managers have been authorized to buy back your current vehicle at above-market prices ... we feel confident that you can make this exchange with little or no money down and with a monthly payment at or possibly lower than you are paying now."

It looks legit, and lists the dealer we bought from as the place to show up for the offer, but it still sounds too good to be true (unless they're really offering to swap our MDX for nice new 2-door sedan ;). On the other hand, just last week we had the transmission replaced on our 2003 MDX under warranty after only owning the car for about four months, so perhaps they're trying to lower warranty liability?

Has anyone else received one of these letters? Any good/bad experiences with the process?

Yes,

I did this and had a good experience (worked out for both parties). If you are considering this, you need to go in well informed.

Look at this as what you want the out of door cost to be. In my case, excluding title & taxes, at that time, I wanted to spend no more than 11k to 12k for a like trade. e.g. 2003 Touring with RES for 2006 Touring for RES. I based this on the KBB value for excellent (since they stated above average) for my car at its mileage and what I believed was reasonable to purchase at that time (so for now, I would say invoice - $2500).

Although I did not get the out of door at 11k, I did get 12k and looked at it as an opportunity to upgrade to get the NAV and a new color choice (Black on Black looked awesome clean, but it was hard to keep clean and got really hot in the summer).

I actually went in very skeptical and thinking of not pulling the trigger and came out pleasantly suprised (my wife was really suprised). Go in well informed, but willing to walk away unless you find it reasonable deal.

Very happy, slight changes are nice, and I can't wait t get a bluetooth phone, glad I sprung for the NAV.

Good luck and tell us how it worked out.

I am sure that this is legitimate. It should be easy to do with any vehicle with any dealer at any time as long as you have normal equity in your vehicle.

While it sounds good, the catch is that your payments will now be spread out over a much longer period than they are currently.

The dealer is not going to lose money just to get an 03 on his lot.

I believe this is all marketing than anything. No offense but an 03 MDX is nothing special. I've receive letters similiar to these from Infiniti/Honda and Acura dealership before. They are simply trying to get you into the dealership. If you are a good negotiator, you will not have to over pay for a new vehicle while getting your used vehicle for a higher amount. If you are not informed with the market value of a new MDX, invoice may sound attractive and one would think it's a good deal.

This is axactly what it is....as we have sent one out this weekend very similar to it as well. Nothing but marketing to get you in the door. Yo will not be getting anything special other than different treatment..by that I mean..when we do these, we put our best foot forward with our customers first shot to try to help them upgrade. Not a lot of back and forth. Your info was obtained by a targeted search through their service records as someone that should be in a good position to trade out and get into a new one with very little effort financially from yourself.

So is it legit..yes....but you are NOT going to get an "even swap"...just possible an even "payment" based on your equity...and of course..new debt!!!! :D

Check it out...if it works out.....great. Just don't go in with false expectations.
