First time ever want to use the roof rack on my 93 MDX. Is there any way to carry duffle bags or suitacases using the rack without buying a cargo carrier? I'll be doing about 4 hours highway driving with a full car.
Thanks

It is a pretty sorry excuse for a roof rack. Mostly for decoration as far as I can tell.

You need something like this:

It's basically a giant canvas bag with a large zipper. The bag has adjusable staps all around the sides. You place the bag on the roof first, then use the straps to secure the bag against the roof rails. You then put all your stuff into the bag, then zip it up. Now you just tighten the straps all around. The MDX only has roof rails that run parallel to the car, but it will still work, just make sure you tighten the straps as much as you can.

I use a similar product from Basix Auto Expressions called Roof Top Cargo Carrier that I purchased from Walmart locally. I have used it a few times and with great success. Make sure you only put large bulk but lightweight stuff on the roof and leave the small but heavy stuff in your trunk. You should try and limit the stuff you carry on the roof to around 60 pounds for practical reasons.

The MDX has rails that run longitudinal and perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle. However, the parallel rains are not adjustable as they are on most vehicles. At least this is the configuration on my 2004.

Sure wish the perpendicular rails were adjustable.

While I agree that the roof rack is far from optimal, I have used time and again to haul all sorts of things. Most recently, I strapped lumber and decking materials used to build my deck. I did however make multiple trips so as to keep the weight load to a reasonable level. In the past I have tied many items very successfully.

This is the bag I used. Holds about 6 filled duffel bags. I had 5 bags in it on my last trip. I believe Walmart price was $25 also. I bought it about 1.5 years back from WalMart.
