SDTS,
As you may recall based on previous posts/discussions, I'm trying hard to buy a new or slightly used MDX. I see post after post of people buying '06 touring/nav and, in some cases, touring/nav/res for <$37K.
Based on my efforts to date, there is just no dealer in Chicago or MI, so far, that will even get into a discussion with numbers like these.
What is it that I am missing here? How did guitarlp purchase a new '06 touring/nav/res for < $37K.
It is because I'm a cash buyer and they cannot make any money on the financing? Maybe I should not disclose I'm a cash buyer until after a price is settled.
I'm struggling to find anything used - '05 or '06 - with <20K miles for under $33K. There is no way I'm going to do this if for a few thousand bucks more I can get into a new vehicle.
What the heck is going on? I'm heading to Columbus, OH over the weekend to visit in-laws. Do you think I may get luck by throwing $36,800 for touring/nav at dealers in that area?
HELP!!! Have cash - want X!!! (but won't overpay on principal)

eurojap-
Have you figured out that SDTS is a dealer or is associated with one? With that in mind I don't know how he/she will answer your questions. They may be able to help, they may not. But it seems like the old "fox in the hen house" if you ask me. With that said, anyone handing out advise on the Internet should always be viewed with a grain of salt, including me.
You did hit the nail on the head. When negotiating you do not discuss financing/trade-in/cash etc. until you have established, in writing, the price. If you are asked about any of these issues during negotiations you merely reply that you haven't decided what you will be doing yet.
So stop bragging about the cash ;) and go do some negotiating. You're getting close to month-end which can't hurt either.
Good luck. |

andreseng,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
Yeah, I gathered SDTS is a dealer but haven't quite figured out why he hasn't offered me a deal!! Heck, shipping of $600-$800 on top of $36,600 is still a deal compared to my local market!
As for the cash buyer stuff, sorry about that. It's really not cash when you take it from equity. It's just cash to the dealer/individual. I looks impressive to drop a certified check on someone's desk, that's all. I've had good luck buying down prices with cash on cars for my Mother and Son over the past couple years.
Incidentally, I really like the Batman routine.

Yes...I am a dealer.....and contrary to some opinions around here, I will answer any question I am ever asked....and will do so honestly! I would have nothing at all to gain from lieing to any of you.
What you need to do, is find out what people are paying in your area. Every area is different. In the BAy Area and LA, we have multiple dealers within extremely short distances of one another, so our aggression on pricing is usually the best in the country. But to giv eyou an idea how quickly it can change, Fresno, CA..a little over two hours away, will not get into holdback and barely even goes below INVOICE!!! But they have no competition within 2 hours of them, so they hold the power of negotiations over the consumer.
message boards are a great way to find out what people pay for their cars. Some are indeed fish stories, no doubt, but most are true. Usually the fish stories are so extreme, you can find them pretty easily.
So, hop on the internet, get some quotes, expect to be able to "fine tune" them a few hundred more. That is the easiest way.
Cash however means nothing to us. We get cash from either you or the bank. Financing actually gives us a chance to make more money, as people turn into "payment buyers" which makes it easier to sell more stuff. Anytime a dealer or salesperson makes you feel special cause you are paying cash, it is nothing but a line to make you feel like you are getting a deal better than anyone else cause you paid cash. the money you save paying cash, is no interest!!!! :D
From the sounds of things around here, getting the California prices in your area might just be impossible. You might have to raise your bar on new and used prices, as all of my price suggestions are all California based, as I do not spend time in other markets.
If anyone is in California, NorCAl or SOcal....I would not pay more than 36 + fees for a touring Nav, and not more than 37+ Fees for NAv/DVD.....there are MANY dealers that will go to these prices. SOunds as though you need to add about $1000 to those prices in other areas....for those areas, you are still getting a GREAT deal!!!!
Hope that helps! |

| SDTS, what would be the approximate cost of shipping the vehicle to another state? I'm in the Seattle area. Thanks. |

| SDTS |
seattle would probably be somewhere around $500.
Go to this site...you can put in your info and they will give you a free quote without having to give contact numbers and all of that stuff!!! We use them all the time for customers doing the out of state thing.

it is the cross country stuff that gets really expensive. |

SDTS,
I have no problem with the fact that you're a dealer. While it can be tough to tell from the posts, my assessment of you is positive. I've read a bunch of your posts and have no issues with any of it. You've got my confidence until you prove otherwise. ;}
As for the pricing information, I think you're right and appreciate the insight. I spoke with my nearest dealer (~80 miles) this morning and told them to take their best shot. The salesmen, whom I've met before, told me they NEVER go into their holdback as a matter of policy. Further, they never sell below invoice. On the up side, if there is one, they charge the same price regardless of colors and all vehicles include mats, cargo tray/cover, wheel locks, etc.
I found an '05 sagebrush touring/nav/res + rear spoiler with 13K miles on it. They're asking $33,900 for it. I'm going to look at it Saturday AM and will have a certified check in my pocket made out for $32K. If the vehicle is what the present it to be, I'll hand them the check and hope they take it, although they were talking tough in terms of that price being pretty firm on the phone.
I told the dealer mentioned above about my journey for the '05 and if that didn't work out, I would be offering a couple dealers in that area ~$36.6K for a touring nav model. I explained that I would much rather buy it from them but would not pay a $1K-$1.5K premium to do it.
Incidentally, I checked and to have an MDX shipped from NorCal to MI is $679. So SDTS, if you'll sell me an '06 touring/nav for ~$36.6K and the MI dealer clears that plus the $679 shipping charges by wide margin, we could make a deal.

Who are you dealing with?
I just bought my Silver 06 Touring with Chrome side steps, All weather mats, cargo liner and wheel locks in Chicago for 34,700 + taxes and license. Another dealer offered it to me at 34,900
My dealer offered me the same MDX with Nav for 37,300.
And I was a cash buyer. |

| I'm sorry...I was not saying you were saying bad things of me, there are just always people that no matter what someone says once they are in the business, I am a liar or cheat of somekind. It was much more of a "generalization statement" than my post suggested. |

In case that was aimed at me my point was, you may be the best or worst Acura dealer on the planet. You may be a prepubescent teen with nothing else better to do than dole out advise on things you don't know about.
If you found that offensive I apologize. But the world is what the world is and the Internet has become a breeding ground for this sort of "fun".
Peace :soapbox: |
