Hey Wayne - I'd like to say I'm sorry to see you go but I know you stopped posting on thie board long ago anyway. Your detailed, informative posts here are sorely missed.
I was actually on your cleanMPG site last week researching my next car which I think will be a Prius as a commuter to replace my wife's CRV late next year. Great site!
Try not to be a stranger to this board when you can. |

Hi Crmsnidol:
___I sure do miss the place but like most, we find other outlets … In my case, I never got to drive the X except for vacations and that is when I really lost my enthusiasm. The wife still loves it and already complaining about where we will place the groceries, go out with the entire family, what if she were to heaven forbid get into an accident in a small car … all that stuff but she also wants something a little more sporty this time around. The Camry is not sporty but that new ES runs like a rocket on wheels. That is the last thing on my mind however! I was hoping the RDX would have come with the straight up K24 like in the Accord (maybe a low load Atkinson lobe like the new Civic’s 1.8) as it has plenty of power and the FE is darn good already but alas, Acura was pushing the performance of that little ute and I think they messed up a bit? The grocery discussion really came about when she saw how small the Camry Hybrid’s trunk was and said ahh ohhh, this might be a problem so who knows?
___After looking at all the various car web sites for used 03 MDX pricing, it looks like I placed her up for a very nice price considering the Accessories and Condition so hopefully we will be in an ES/TCH in the not to distant future. I am still hoping she will drop down to a Prius II but she sure is giving me a lot of flack about that one :(
___About that Prius you are considering … If and when you were to pick one up sometime in the future, PM/E-Mail me and if I am ever on the east coast (I travel out that way about once a year) we can head on out for a P&G clinic. I take people out all the time for FE clinics and their FE increases dramatically not just for the clinics drive but the techniques they learn stay with them the rest of their lives. A Prius can be made to really sing in the right kind of environment if you haven’t heard. With the right training and the right kind of driver behind the wheel, you are going to enjoy it as a non-lux daily commuter for sure.
___And to add a plug for the MDX/CleanMPG as well as you being a big city like native in your own right, there was a heavy snowstorm the evening of 1/21/05 (the evening we had a 9” snowfall throughout the Chicago area last year) and my 2 sons and I were traveling through the meat of that monster … We were actually headed to see the Harlem Globetrotter’s at the United Center in downtown Chicago that evening. A lot of fun to see them in action for the first time but the weather was absolutely atrocious :( Anyway, I think the following picture speaks with its own voice considering the temperature, weather conditions, where and what we were traveling through. Again, the MDX is really worth something special when running as smooth as a babies bottom near its maximum steady state cruise FE limits … Much slower speed travel of course given the conditions but this one shocked me because of the temperatures and weather conditions. Hopefully others will learn how to do the same with their MDX’s by reading and practicing just a few of the techniques posted in the article section I as well as others upload over at CleanMPG. Just reading some of the older FE posts around here should get the average MDX owner up to speed although there is no free lunch unfortunately :( I know the picture below sucks but it was my 13 year old son at the time taking it from the back seat. I take poor pictures most of the time too so I am not complaining in the least ;)

2003 Acura MDX in the middle of a Chicago Blizzard - 31.2 mpg!
___Thanks again for the warm welcome. It has been too long and I only wish the MDX was my own although I am sure most here would have got tired of hearing about FE, FE, and even more about FE as I tend to get a bit obsessive about my cars and the discussions of such :D
___Good Luck to you and yours and I will be sure to keep the light on for you over at CleanMPG.

how the heck do you get 30+ mpg around town???
I lived in Libertyville, now in NJ & best I can do in my 2004 Touring is 16 mpg. Not a lead foot, but not a cupcake either! WOW! 30 mpg in a 7-passenger AWD SUV. You're giving it away @ $25k!!! |

Hi SilverBullet1:
___One4gatr has it right on … There a multitude of techniques to crush the EPA but do not use the most advanced as your MDX is not a Prius. 40 + would be in the cards if you did but she is just too heavy a vehicle for that kind of manipulation. The following is just one resource that might help: Beating the EPA - The Why’s and how to Hypermile.
___Just the other night my wife and I went to the local grocery store with her. At 65 mph in the far right lane while holding onto a surf draft from a (4) string convoy of 18-wheeler’s in the center lane, she was holding a solid 40 mpg on the iFCD! The only problem is we were running the Interstate for just 4 miles :( Pretty amazing given a surf draft is trailing the target(s) in an adjacent lane while Ridge Riding. I ended up in the low 31 mpg range or thereabouts that night after arriving home.
An example of a Surf Draft

___I would be pleased to give an hour long Hypermiling clinic to the new owner so he or she can perform similarly if they so choose.
___Good Luck

Do you really think that the person that purchases this MDX will ever see even close to 30+ mpg driving it in a "normal" manner:jester: |

Hi SilverBullet1:
___Thank you!
___Rvehok, you are probably right. However … I remember taking out a couple on a clinic in there almost brand new Prius II (EPA rated 60/51) last year near Pittsburgh. Temps were in the mid 80’s, auto climate was set to 75 degrees, the car had less then 5,000 miles and was packed with camping gear as they had just returned. After ~ 20 miles RT, they finished off at 86.x mpg with all the gear and 3 of us in the car … Just one of the more memorable clinics I have given over the years ;)
___Using a judicious amount of both accelerator and brake from stop light to stop light only to sit, idle, and wait as well as exceeding posted speed limits by a healthy margin is what I would deem uncharacteristically uncaring given the US’ current situation :(
___Good Luck
