I currently have a leased 2002 MDX....My wife drives it and she likes it a lot. The lease is up NOW, and we're considering buying it. However, we keep procrastinating as we're wondering if we should turn it in and buy a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. We have a 3.5 year old boy and a 4 week old boy...fyi.
1. Buy MDX - residual $20,000 - 49K miles - Great condition
2. Buy '06 Odyssey? Buy '07 Odyssey?
3. Buy '07 Sienna?
As a side note, our MDX was involved in an accident last Sunday (the exact date that our lease was up). I extended the lease by a month so I could see how bad the damage was before buying the MDX. The MDX held up incredibly well...only $3,200 in damage (no frame damage) while the car that hit us was totaled. My family (including three week old) were unharmed! This makes me an even bigger fan of the MDX.
Thanks for any thoughts out there!

| seeing as you are using the vehicle for mostly family use, i would lean toward the minivan (the odyssey of course) using the 3rd row is a pain in the butt, plus when you use it, you have no room for gear in the trunk. |

| Given the transmission problems that the 2001/2002 model years have, I would not recommend keeping it. At a minimum I would recommend a new MDX. However, given that you have a growing family, you will find the extra space and conveniences (auto sliding doors/etc) of the mini-van come in very handy. We've had both an MDX and a Sienna. The Sienna had a bunch of non-typical problems that caused us to get rid of it, but my wife far preferred it over the MDX for those conveniences. Both the Sienna and Ody are fine vehicles and it would just be your preference between the two - or maybe the best deal. I would steer clear of any of the minivan version with run-flats - there are many complaints about premature wear and high replacement costs. You can probably get a better deal on a 2006 if you need one now due to rebates, but I'm sure the 2007's will be selling for invoice also making the savings minimal. |

My wife has a 2005 Odyssey Touring Edition. We both love the car. I would pick it again in a heatbeat. Yes, I do not like the Michelin PAX tires and they do not wear great. It will be expensive to replace. The tires themselves are approximately $175 each but the mounting costs run them up to about $300 each. I am waiting for a similar class action suit as with the Sienna. Regardless, the Odyssey Touring Edition has enough features for the price paid that I will rationalize the expensive tires.
Now, I am the one shopping for the 2007 MDX (which is which is why I am on this forum).
For a family vehicle, the Honda Odyssey is the way to go. Also, whichever model you get, take the leather option. With kids, it is a must.
If you have any questions about the Odyssey, let me know.

Letti001 -- Thanks for the response. I've done some additional reading about the '02 MDX and the transmission problems. Knowing all of that, I think we better go for the van.
Do you have any thoughts about:
1. '06 vs. '07 Odyssey? Seems there are not many changes for '07 but wouldn't have to take as big of a depreciation hit the first year. Of course, I realize that the deal will be better on the '06. However, in 4-6 years when I'm ready to trade the van in, I may get more for trade in with '07.
2. I read the '07 Sienna will have a much faster engine so I'm thinking of waiting so I can test drive that.
3. Good luck with your '07 MDX purchase. It looks really great...just can't afford it on this end. We've been so happy with our MDX and the whole Acura experience...I have a TL in addition to the MDX.
Thanks again! |

Not so sure about that Odessy. My daughter just bought a new one whichI rode in 3 days ago. Seemed ratherflimsey to my. No where near as solid as my MDX. Also the insulation seemed to be lacking as the ride was noisey.

Go with the 2006 Odyssey. I looked at the 2007 and there is really not much different. Go with the better deal.
The money saved can go towards the PAX tire replacement (if Touring Edition bought) and you will not feel so bad having bought the van for a little less.
I think of the Odyssey Touring Edition more akin to the Acura line and that the EX/LX models are nearer to Honda.
Having said all that, I am still on the hunt for the new MDX because it will likely have much the same feel as the Odyssey which I like.

I own a 2006 MDX and we recently sold our Odyssey for a Volvo XC90, but our children are 7 and 6. The Odyssey was INVALUABLE during the timeframe your children are. Get the van and consider a crossover vehicle about 5-6 years later.
