Yes I know there are many threads covering warranty but this is different. Our 2002 MDX is turning four years old at the end of the week. We only have about 28,000 miles on it and has had no mechanical problems.
Here's the thing, it was involved in an accident at around 12,000 miles. One axle was replaced and the front clip had to be repositioned. They did a good job and the vechicle runs well. However, the dealer could tell it had been in an accident by putting it on a lift for one minute. Replacement Acura parts do not have bar codes like the parts used in new assembly. The related repairs are covered by my insurance company and the repair shop for as long as we keep the MDX.
I was thinking about an extended warranty (non-navi) but am now rethinking my position. I think that if there are transmission or other problems Acura may cover them but perhaps not. The extended warranty may react the same way and blame the accident.
Now here's my question, what would you folks do?
1. Keep it and worry about problems when/if they occur.
2. Buy the extended warranty and be prepared to fight.
3. Sell it and start all over again with an 06 or 07.
I really don't want to buy a new one but I have to look at all options. Your opinions are appreciated. |

| I guess people are too caught up with the 07 X. Well here's my late reply: Given the existing problems and the potential transmission issues with your 02. I'd sell it and get a new 06 or wait for the 07, if you still want an MDX. There's a whole slew of crossovers and SUVs out there now, though. |

I have been watching with interest the direction that Acura is going. I personally think that the RDX and the new MDX are misdirected. By this, I mean that I don't think I'm in the new target market for either.
In view of my experience with Honda over the past 30 years, I think I'm going to stick with our current MDX for a few more years. It has already taken the big depreciation hit, runs fine, looks good and has been paid for for a long time. In addition, we only average around 7,000 miles per year. Worst case, I'll have to spend around $3,000 for a remanufactured transmission at some point.
The approximate $20k-$30k out of pocket to upgrade just does not make sense to me at this time. |
