Hi there. I've religiously charged the battery on my '04 MDX every week or two since new. With only 28K miles, all of a sudden, it barely cranks the engine enough to start. And the stupid green key on the dash blinks all the time. Charged it overnight, green light on the charger, and still barely cranks. DEAD CELL (or two).
Called dealer and said I have to pay $75 proration, when most new premium batteries at auto parts store cost that much. Plus don't have to drive 40 miles each way (dealer) to get it.
I think the answer is obvious: buy an aftermarket.. but which one? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gentlemen, I apologize for posting something it has been discussed before, but I tried searching for 'batery', and nothing came up (duh!). Since I need a battery NOW, I tried the general search rather than the 'advanced' one, and a ton of posts came up. Tried the 'advanced' again, and bingo! Check your spelling folks < he he>.
Anyway, can't wait for an Optima, so will try the Autozone DURALAST GOLD for $75, 750cca, 8-yr warranty with 3-yr free replacement. Hope it lasts a lot longer than the crappy stock one. Hope the extra dough buys me a better battery than a Walmart one.
Go ahead and post comments if you want; wife won't be back until late afternoon. Take care.

Are you saying that you have "charged" your battery over and above the charging it gets while being driven?
How are you doing this charging? If done improperly you could have caused the premature failure of your original battery.

Come on man; even my little one knows how to hook up my fully automatic battery tender+. You can leave it hooked up if you want, but I don't.
Back to subject. No battery had ever failed me until now, period. But there's always a first time. Just came back from Autozone, and their 24F-DLG fit perfecty... and starts the engine in a hurry. Problem solved. |

| I went for the $40 Walmart special - better than the OEM battery it replaced and a hell of a lot cheaper. Swapped it out in the Walmart parking lot, brought the dead OEM into customer service and got my $7 or whatever it was. |

Why are you using a battery charger to charge the battery while in the vehicle? Has your alternator failed or do you just not drive the MDX for long periods of time?

My motorcycles and convertible are used infrequently. The MDX for very short distances; no alternator can keep a battery charged under those conditions. If not charged regularly, plates start sulfating, lose their ability to hold a charge, and eventually leave you stranded; that's why battery chargers are sold.
If you're a long distance commuter, you obviously don't need a charger.
By reading the many problems with MDX batteries, they're crap IMO. Went with the Duralast due to their superior power (750 CCA) and better construction (8-yr warranty). The way I take care of my batteries, it should be the last one I buy for this car before I sell it. Have a happy Labor Day everyone. |
