Excessive fan noise when running A/C - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a 2002 MDX. I, like most here, experienced the tranny problems and had to have my tranny replaced with re-manufactured tranny from Acura. (Fingers crossed), no problems since. I also was able to get a 7-year, 100k extended warranty out of Acura after many calls and gripes. Others were not so fortunate.

My problem now is that I have excessive fan noise coming out of the glove compartment area when the air conditioning is on higher mode. I took it to the dealer who advised me that they found tons of debris (pine needles and tar) in the way. They unblocked it free of charge. That was about two weeks ago, but the excessive fan noise is back. I find it odd that anything was blocked by pine tar and/or needles as I garage my car and don't have any pine needles or trees anywhere that I park it. Is this some kind of dealer cop-out to avoid replacing a fan motor and/or busing? It still chills fine, but the noise is excessive. Any thoughts or recommendations would be welcomed.

I had this problem on my 01 a couple years ago. Do a search for "blower motor". I had it cleaned out (nothing really in there) and eventually replaced. Just recently the problem came back. I can make it go away for a while if I turn the whole system off and then back on again (hit the "off" button then the "auto" button). However, eventually I hit a bump or something and the noise starts up again. To me it seems that the fan is out of balance or something. I'm kind of pissed that it came back considering the blower motor replacement wasn't cheap. I have to call my repair shop and see what the warrantee is on that part.

I'd also like to know if it is hard to take the blower motor out myself to check for debris. I could have debris in there, but it doesn't seem like it since the problem is intermittent, not constant - and I can make it go away for a while.

Anyone want to post a "how-to" with pics on how to remove/replace the blower motor? Supertech, you got any 411 on this problem? Is there a way to tighten or adjust the spindle that the fan is on? Or something like that?

I have the same problem with my 03 MDX. It sounds like a CD player spining. I took it to the dealer and the service guy gave the same BS answer. Well I got into the car with him and told him to listen. When he told me that's normal I made him take me to another MDX on the lot.

As you may have guessed. The other MDX was completly silent. I had him replace the blower motor and it seems to be fine now.

To Knick33:

Thanks for the input. My next step is to take it in when the area rep. is there to have him get involved. I am also filing the claim with Acura North America to push for having my fan motor replaced. I'm not buying the one leaf or one pine needle hypothesis.

Thinking about purchasing re-designed MDX when it comes out, so the dealer better do me right.

I started my car yesterday and I am starting to hear excess noise coming out of the glove compartment when I have the A/C on high. It sounded like a motor to me, I'm assuming its the blower motor that everyone is talking about. Anyone else had a similar problem and if so is there an easy way for a do it yourself-er like me to have get some diagrams on opening that area for a replacement.

Same issue here in Orlando at Fountain Acura on my 01. First they said leaves and debris are in the way, and so they charged $50 bucks to clean it out. It did not do a thing, and they expected me not to notice? I took it bakc soon after, and they replaced the motor for some $250. I did have them credit the "false diagnosis of leaves" to the cost of it. I hear it now and then though, so when I can get it consisant (or hopefully it goes away), I will take it back to them and tell them it is still bad.

Come on Acura. Honesty please!

I have an 01 MDX i bought with the noise. I am a heated seat and cold air type of guy, and i alays just use my windows in the summer so i never really noticed it or cared so i let it be for a long time. But i have twice taken it out to clean it and both times it did have leaves and other crap in there but nothing too major. I put it back together and still had the noice. So i recently (today about 2 hours ago) bought a new blower motor and plan on putting it in mid to late next week. I will take pictures and a how to, to the best of my ability. It is a easy task, but very difficult to manuver your body to fit into the area you need to be. Luckily im short and fairly small 5'7 and 160, so i lay on my seat upside down with my head on the floor to get at it. Again, its not a hard job just hard to get to. I will have some pics and how toos like i said late next week. I prob wont be able to load them on this site so just mail me if you are going to want it.

This is the second time I've had to shell out $80 to have the Blower Motor Fan cleaned out by the dealer. OUCH!!!

Does anyone have detailed pictures, step by step instructions about how to both remove and clean this and the air intake at the windshield cowling out???

If so, would you kindly post/share them.

Thanks!
