Buzz in Headphones Problem - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have an '03 with the Navi and RES. I have this intermittent problem with the headphones while playing DVDs. We'll be driving along and suddenly you can't hear anything in the headphones (for the rear seat passengers, obviously) except a rather loud buzzing sound. You can't hear anything from the movie at all. If you listen through the car's regular door speakers, though, the sound is fine. It is not cell phone related, as the first thing we tried was turning off all the cell phones. It's not a morse code type buzzing that you get when the cell phone is bleeding over into some sound systems. We never have that problem with our X. Instead, it's a constant buzz. Then, sometimes it will go away. Other times, it's there for the entire trip. We've tried turning the system or car on or off, and it doesn't go away with that.

We took it to the dealer, who claims it's interference from our aftermarket HIDs, and of course, he could not duplicate the problem, as it wouldn't buzz when it was in for service. But the buzz happens whether the lights are on or off, and the lights were installed last year, and the problem only started occurring recently. There have been no other modifications or changes to the car since then. I also checked with the installer and HID dealer who explained how the HIDs could not possibly be the problem (although he is obviously self-interested, I believed him and it made sense to me).

Any ideas what it is? Seems to me it's an intermittent fault in the infrared system that transmits to the audio signal to the headphones, but it only seems to happen with movies and not with other audio sources (but now that I think of it, I'm not sure we tried it with the other audio sources).

The only thing I don't see you trying is changing the batteries.

Another thought. Does this buzz happen in both pairs of headphones at the same time?

Yes, I tried that. It happens with both sets of headphones at the same time. :(
