I noticed my gas gauge acting odd 2 weeks ago. I filled up, the gauge registered full, then after 50 miles it was down to 1/2 tank. By the time it was about 1/4 full I had only driven 150 miles. I filled up - it took a long time for the gas to go in the tank & then the nozzle didn't stop. I was watching the pump, heard a click & then saw gas pouring out of the MDX. I quickly stopped the pump. It only took 11 gallons. Mileage was poor (13.5) but had all short trips. I cleaned up the gas, left the station & my gauge registered just slightly above 1/2 full. Now after driving it a few miles it will go up to 3/4, but it obviously is not reading properly. I did a search on fuel sending units & only saw a few posts - those related to the fuel gauge staying at full & problems with trying to pump gas into the tank.
Anyone else have an issue? I don't have the extended warranty & will need to pay to have this fixed. I noticed one person had it replaced in 2002 (obviously that was under warranty.). The dealer said I could come in & for $95 they will do a diagnostic on it. Before I go in, I was hoping to have any input from the forum from anyone that may have had a similar issue. The service writer did tell me that the fuel pump needs to be replaced if the fuel sending unit is bad - since they work together & the aftemarket parts never work right if I choose to go that route. He thought it would run between $300 - $500, but didn't know & said he never saw one go bad in an MDX. Thanks in advance. |

Had the exact same problem.

Does the MDX have a fuel filter? under Fuel, Octane, mileage
First they changed the sending unit. Then the entire fuel tank and a relief value.
Fortunately it was all under warranty.

Check to be sure that there have not been any reports of "bad" gasoline in your area.
About 3 years ago I had a problem with the fuel sender in my then 1998 Chevy Blazer. My problem was that the guage never showed any fuel used.
Turned out to be a problem with one Shell gasoline refinery. They delivered bad fuel to about 500 stations. I had a receipt showing that I had purchased Shell fuel at one of the bad stations in Tampa Florida.
I got bids here in town for a new sensor and Shell sent me a check. It is not likely that you have encountered this type of problem, but it never hurts to check around.

Jeff - I read your post & wasn't sure if that was the same problem. Unfortunately I am out of warranty. We chose to keep the MDX since I don't drive that much (about 8k/yr). I will have the dealer check it out & hopefully it won't be too expensive. Thanks for the additional feedback. |

George - I will check with 7-11 (citgo fuel) since that is where I first noticed it. The 2nd tank was from a Conoco station (where the pump wouldn't shut off). Thanks for the advice |
