I know that many people that had or wanted to buy kayaks have lamented the lack of utility for the MDX factory rack. I just wanted to share my latest experience. I have long had fork-mount bike trays on my MDX factory rack (see my sig for pics) but I recently purchased a 14 ft tandem kayak. Due to the weight and size (approx 70 lbs and nearly 14ft) I determined that the J-style racks (hullraiser and hull a port) were not a good choice because I needed to load the kayak alone most of the time. But I determined those J racks would attach to the factory rack just fine.
The setup I purchased was the Thule Glide N Set and it works beautifully with a couple of comments/limitations. First, I have an 01 MDX which has crossbars that are wider than the later MDXs. This actually helps as it's more useful than in newer years. The minimum spread according to Thule is 24" - other than that I cannot comment on racks for current MDXs.
Second, my kayak is wide enough so that this style carrier would not allow multiple kayaks but I only have one right now anyway.
Installation is a breeze and the factory racks are rated for 150 lbs I believe so they are plenty strong. |

| Very cool mount. Looks clean and simple. I will have to chek into one for R MDX. |
