Buying a Code Reader or HDS - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hello,

Can anyone suggest a good basic code reader? The technical manual refers to an HDS, but I just want a simple diagnostic tool to give me the codes to keep in my emergency bag. I have looked at various models in my research, but seem to just be finding the ones with all the bells and whistles for around $250. I hear that there are much, much less expensive units.

Then again, as my signature states, I am a techno geek. I wouldn’t mind getting one of the more elaborate units for the ability to access all the performance data while driving, but just can’t see the need unless I am going to be towing things over long trips. Any comment?

The Honda Diagnostic System tablet is a very advanced piece of equipment. It not only lets you read codes, but monitor live data, perfom function tests on various systems, update the PCM software, and some other cool stuff. Most store bought code readers will only read powertrain codes. Things like body electrical codes, airbag codes, VTM-4 codes, and some tohers can only be read by the HDS or PGM-FI tester on the pre 2003 cars.

However...an HDS is about $6000. If all you want to do is just read powertrain codes, I wouldn't be surprised if you can't find some type of thing that uses a PDA that you hopefully already have for about a hundred bucks.

Not sure if this meets your needs or not, but it's only $170 and may satisfy your geek lust for information.

What exactly is it that you'd like to do with a code reader ?

There are basically two types. One that will just show a DTC (diagnositc trouble code), if one gets set that is. So its not very useful if no DTC's are set, and they dont get set very so often (otherwise you are really in trouble), so its not of much use buying a basic code reader, imho.

The other type of code reader will actually poll real-time sensor data from the OBD (on-board diagnostics) module - like timing, intake air temperature, O2 sensor. Like supertech said the number of sensors are very limited. You need something like an HDS to look into the "enhanced" sensors.
However, seems like Auterra and Autoenginuity are going to come up with enhanced sensor upgrade for Honda as well (rumoured to be available sometime this fall). So that is very encouraging news for Honda users.

If you have a Palm or PocketPC then go for Auterra or AutoEnginuity .
If you have a laptop and would like something more basic and economical then go for - www.obd-2.com (my preference)

I have used the Autoenginuity for several years. It connects to your laptop so you can see live data and also collect data while on the road. I'm very happy with it. Will be evem happier if they offer a version to read enhanced codes.
