i needed to replace one of my tires on my 01 mdx because it popped. When i went into the tire shop and they refused to replace just one tire, they said they needed to replace all 4 because it was a 4 wheel drive and the tires need to have all the same tread or wear, because it strains too much on the transmission. I argued with him and thought it was all bull****. so i left and went to another place, they told me the same thing, does anybody know if this is true? or just replaced just one tire? my other tires are still 70% left and i dont wanna change them.
thanks

In general I want to replace both tires on any given axel. However, with 70% that may be right at my decision point. I really think you would have to be looking at the specific tires to make that decision. Of course you are going to replace with the exact same tire.

By the way, the MDX is not 4 wheel drive.

Make sure that you replace the one tire with the same as the other 3 and you will be fine. If there is a little more wear than you thought, you might replace the other tire on the same axle.

What tires do you have on your X??

I think I'd go with the "replace 2" approach so you have the same on an axle. Look at it this way. Now you just need to find a cheap rim off a wrecked MDX or some other mdx.org member and you'll have a full sized spare. I've replaced just one before, but it was when a sidewall got cut when the tire was only about a month old.

Replacing all 4 is not necessary at all. Replacing 2 of the same axle sounds reasonable, but what happens after rotate the tires down the road?

My suggestion is just replace one tire. The thread shouldn't be any concern, most new tires have 10/32" of tread depth, which is about .3", you won't feel anything.

As for the transmission, I am not sure what they are talking about. The transmission has differential which will take care of the unequal rotation of the wheels. And, in fact, there is no equal rotation of any 2 wheels at all no matter what. So, you don't need to consider this. The tire shops either don't know tranny or just want more money from you by scaring you.

If I were you, I would not let them tell me what they want. If they don't want to do business, go somewhere else.

yeah thanks for the info guys i replaced just one with a toyo proxy tire, the tires that were on before was some wild spirit tire, so far there seems to be no problem, I knew they were trying to take my money, but it wasnt just one tire shop that said it, so i was kinda worried.
thanks

Wow....I would have NEVER replaced one tire with a completely different tire but....... good luck!

All tires are different. Different size (slight differences between brands on same size markings) different tread patterns, different weights etc....etc.....
