Hello,
My goal is to install a Garmin GVN52 navigation unit ( http://www.garmin.com/products/gvn52/ ) into my 2006 Acura MDX with factory navigation. I do not and never plan to use OnStar, so I am thinking of disabling it and taping into this system’s wiring harness with my Garmin unit. Here are the questions that I have with my initial research:
1. GPS antenna. The Acura tech manual labels the OnStar antenna as a combination GPS and cellular phone antenna. Does anyone know if this is a fully capable GPS antenna or some kind of restricted use just for OnStar? My goal is to use this antenna instead of the Garmin’s antenna.
2. Audio. The Garmin unit provides audio directions and warnings. I have isolated the wiring that OnStar uses to patch into the audio system, but am unsure how a signal is prioritized when music and/or a cellular phone call (via Bluetooth connection) is in progress. Does anyone know about this? The Garmin unit also has a mute wire. Could this be utilized with the factory audio system?
Now, why would I want to go to all this trouble? I live in Phoenix, Arizona and the place that has the most concentration of automated speed/red-light enforcement systems (mobile, intersection, and highway) in the USA, the Garmin unit will allow me to program updated points of interest (POI), thereby allowing me to have a visual map and audio warning of all such caution areas. The Garmin system also has the ability to receive live audio/visual traffic and weather information via XM Radio, which is equally important to me. I plan to interface it with the factory navigation system via a unique video switcher ( http://www.avelectronic.com/Navigat...terfaceDual.htm ). Such a configuration should allow the best of both factory and aftermarket worlds. It should also help me to make my commutes more efficiently and safely.
