Rough in Tight Turns - Click HERE for Original Thread

All,

My relatively new (1 1/2 months) '06 X has a strange sort of rough feeling when making sharp low speed turns. It seems more noticeable when turning right. It is a difficult feeling to describe but almost feels like grinding or rubbing. I'm not talking about maxing out the wheel either, just in normal maneuvers in parking lots and such. There isn't any noise associated with it, just a rough sort of feeling in the steering wheel.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, is it normal for the X? It almost feels like the tires are grabbing the edges a little or something. Again, this is a tough one to describe. It's fairly subtle but there. It does seem to have improved somewhat since it was new so, maybe something is just breaking in.

Anyway, you guys are a wealth of knowledge and I just want to know if it's something I should be concerned with.

I have a similar problem as well with my 2003. The steering feels rough only in slow turns, for example pulling out of a parking spot.

I thought I read somewhere here that it maybe contaminated p/s fluid. I haven't had the chance to try draining mines yet. Since you X is new, I cant imagine bad fluid being a problem. Maybe have the dealer check it out on your next visit.

I wonder if it is something in the 4 wheel drive?

I have a 06 Premium that I bought in Jan, and mine does the same. It almost feels....wierd? Hard to explain. I will ask the dealer next time I go in

eurojap, deejay,

Did you guys notice this when you test drove or first got your X? Just trying to figure out if maybe something might need adjustment?

Thanks,
gdo

The MDX is not 4 wheel drive.

deejay,

Interesting that your new X has the same feeling. I agree that it's weird and hard to characterize. I'll be checking in with the dealer on it. It's not something I can't live with, I would just like to know if it's typical or if something may be wrong.

gdo,

As odd as this may seem, I never drove my X until after I bought it. I drove several others but when I pulled the trigger, this particular color configuration was on a delivery truck. The dealer is an hour and a half away so, I just told them to prep it and picked it up. I noticed the condition within a couple days. I'm quite sure it was there from the start.

I'll check with my dealer and let you guys know if I hear anything.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I have always thought of this as just one of the MDX things, just like the brake clunk that is so very annoying. I have noticed this ever since January when I took delivery of it. I also have noticed an unusual amount of tire swqelling when I make even small, slow turns. I am going to check the tire pressure 2morrow, but that has nothing to do with the roughish feeling around corners. Thanks guys!

deejay,

I saw your posts describing squealing tires in tight turns etc., but I must say, I haven't gotten my new X to make a sound in that category. I gave it heck a couple times deliberately turning hard in a parking lot once for another reason and it really cornered well with no wheel slippage. What kind of tires are on it? I have the stock Michelin Cross Terrain.

Also, I do not hear the brake clunk that I've seen discussed many times. Is it the pads shifting in the calipers the first time you stop after backing up or something? That can be corrected with some shims or retaining clips.

An annoying clunk I do have is the compressor engaging immediately after start up. When the engine is first started, after a few seconds the A/C compressor clutch is engaged and there is a distinct "thump" under the hood. I thought something was wrong but after checking these forums, the dealer, etc., I learned that it's just a characteristic of the X.

As I've said several times in these posts, and I sincerely mean this with no malice ( I love my truck), this is no Mercedes Benz. It's a pretty Honda, and a darn good one too. Likewise, it doesn't carry the price tag of an MB or BMW X5.

You are right. I have the stock tires on mine, the base model chepo tires, and the psi is correst. I am not too concerned with it since the clunk I have gotten used to, and the squelling is not outragous, and if it presists, i will bring it to the dealer. thanks!
