Newbie question about tires/wheels - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey Gang,

I was looking for some input on getting snow tires/wheels for my 06 MDX with Touring. I found a listing for these in the Classifieds. Here is the link to that classified add thread (I hope)?

http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=25769

I am hoping you guys can give me some input on what I should be aware of/concerned about with respect to the wheels? I guess I want to ensure they fit the vehicle properly? That way I'll know what questions to ask if/when I call the guy.

Thanks.

OK, it appears I need to be a bit more specific with my questions.

My understanding is that the OEM wheel size on the 06 MDX is 17 by 6.5 inch with a 45 offset, 5 lugs with 4.5 inch spacing.

When buying aftermarket wheels, how crucial is it that the new wheels have the exact numbers. I have only done a little research, but it seems there are few 17 X 6.5 wheels. 17 X 7 seems pretty common.

So would the 235/65 R17 tires fit a 17 X 7 wheel?

The same issue comes up with the 45 offset. How crucial is that, and can that be altered with shims (OK, very newbie terminology being used here)?

Hopefully someone can clarify my understanding of these dimensions or point me to a thread/site that could help me.

Thanks.

I'm not a wheel expert, but by all accounts, those are great snow tires. I have a second set of wheels mounted with snows and love it. I bought mine from TireRack so I just relied on them to sell me a wheel that would fit - and it did.

I'd find a place that sells that brand of wheel and call and confirm it will fit the MDX. Or contact the manufacturer if that's an option. $1500CAN doesn't sound like that great a deal though. I paid around $1100US all in (wheels/tires/lugs/mount/balance/ship) for my set up last January.

I don't think TireRack stocks Nokian.

A 17 x 7 rim is a better fit for 235/65/17 tires - I always felt that the stock 6.5" rim was a bit too narrow. You should verify the offset, I would stay within +45 or +40 for a 7" wide rim. At first glance, those rims don't look very stout, not sure if they can withstand the daily driving on a 4,500+ lb SUV. When buying aftemarket rims for a SUV, the first thing I'd verify is that they can handle the extra heft, last thing you want is to bend your new rims by driving over a pothole . . .

That's good information Sinecure. The reason I was attracted to this add was a brand new set of Nokians installed/balanced on existing wheels was over $1200 Cdn. I don't think there are too many dealers here in Alberta selling those so a bit pricey.

Thanks SoCalJD, I honestly never even thought about that.

I might have to check out this "Tirerack", see if they ship to Canada.

Thanks for the input guys.

Cheers.

Try 1010tires.com for tires & wheels in Canada.

Hey Vansterdam,

I looked at 1010tires as well as the Tirerack. I eventually went with the Blizzacks from the Tirerack and even with the shipping, duties, and brokerage, I saved over $40 per tire.

I expect them to arrive any day now.

Thanks.

Bill.

When ordering from Tire Rack, expect unreasonable brokerage fees from UPS. I had an $85 dollar tire tun into a $200 tire by the time it was mounted.

How much of that was shipping?

Does not the Tire Rack web site quote shipping charges at the time of order? I have never heard of UPS, or anybody else, adding fees after receiving a package for shipping.

Oh, I forgot to mention when ordering from Tire Rack, shipping into Canada. The shipping was an incredibly reasonable $10 if I remember. The Brokerage fees, duty, taxes, mounting and balancing brought it up to $200 give or take. I have had $20 brokerage fees on $20 items when it was shipped UPS across the border. UPS is a real impediment to cross border trade.

Hey Gang, Here are the details:

Four Blizzack tires from Tirerack $460 US.
The shipping $86 US.
The Duty was $36.22 Cdn. Rate of 7% for tires.
GST was another $33.22 Cdn and finally,
The UPS brokerage was $56 Cdn.
So saved my self $160 over 1010tires.com and close to $300 when compared to local retail purchase.

UPS claims the brokerage fee they charge is for submitting the documents for importing my purchase. I believe there is an Class Action law suit forming in British Columbia on this very topic.

I am not thrilled about UPS getting their grubby fingers in on this. In fact, if shipping via USPS and then Canada Post, the brokerage fee is $5 period. But in the end I still saved myself a few bucks.

Thanks to all the people here who suggested Tirerack.

Cheers.

$56 Brokerage fee? That's usury. Or robbery.

I've heard this repeatedly from snowboarding friends. They are always very careful to use USPS if they get anything shipped to them from the US.

And what happened to NAFTA? I thought we were supposed to have free trade. None of that sounds free to me. I can understand the tax, but IMO duty and the "brokerage fee" are bogus.

And if he drtbk4ever lived in any other Province than Alberta, you would have to tack on another 7-8% Provincial sales tax.

You are right Bob, I only had to pay the GST. Alberta does have a "Tire tax" of $4 per tire, which it I didn't pay either. Yippee, that's another $16 bucks I saved.

Sinecure, robbery is a good description. As for NAFTA, it is only a FREE trade (ie. No Duty) if what you are purchasing was manufactured in the US or Mexico.

Hey, that is the price you pay for having a liberal goverment. j/k :D
Isn't there any online tire stores in Canada?

www.1010tires.com is one Canadian Website. Tirerack was still $160 cheaper overall, and that's even with free shipping from 1010tires.
