Lincoln MKX versus the New MDX - Click HERE for Original Thread

I had a chance to see and drive the new Lincoln MKX CUV this week (it is not officially out until later this fall) and was most impressed. It is a little smaller outside than the 2007 MDX (thankfully) but very spacious inside. It also drives VERY nicely, handles well, and is as quiet as a vault. It's available in both AWD and FWD versions and gets reasonably good mileage (18/26 on the sticker of the one I drove). The transmission is a 6 speed and the engine is their new 3.5L, 4 valve twin cam. With Ford's X program it is also about $10K cheaper...

It is about time to replace our 2001 X and this may be the winner.
The 2007 X has morphed in to a vehicle that no longer meets our needs so it is out of the running. The only big question is reliability but that is what they invented long term warranties for...

(There is also a less expensive alternative to the MKX in the Ford Edge, much like the Pilot is to the MDX...)

Doesn't the Lincoln come with a 6yr warranty standard?

I saw this at the auto shows and was impressed as well. Real nice if you don't need a 3rd row, and the vast majority of MDX buyers don't.
mogur
Yes, it comes with a 6/70 powertrain warranty and 4/50 bumper to bumper warranty. Like you, I have no need for a 3rd row seat and prefer the underfloor space instead. They have a nice underfloor storage system that allows you hide away a goodly amount of stuff out of prying eyes.

The mpg looks good, how many horsepower is it? Are the mpg figures quoted above for a 2 wheel drive or all wheel drive?

It's 265 hp and the mileage quoted is for FWD. AWD is one less for each.

I've been on the Ford family train. It was a big mistake. Engine failure at 38,000 mi. Transmission leaks, brake system problems up your yee ya. Everything looks and feels good in the showroom and during your brief test drive. Think real hard and do your research before you plunk your hard earned dollars down on any new to the market U.S. made auto or truck.

I would not buy the first year of anything new, Acura included. The 01 X proved that...

I liked this car a lot. So I researched Lincoln forums on edmunds. Lincoln has TERRIBLE quality problems and poor service. :-( Sad - I really liked this MKX. Size, power, price and level of luxiry are perfect....

Had my '01 MDX since 12/13/00 without one problem :4: :4: :4:

I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at Lincoln's comparison to Acura in reliability. I didn't think anyone on this planet would choose 1st year Lincoln over 1st year Acura.

Of course, they include a lot of goodies. The financing will be great too. They have to substitute the bad quality with something. If you like that vehicle then get the Mazda CX-9. Same car, way less price, slightly more reliability. And who knew Lincoln was still in business :D

Check out the latest Motor trend. They really trashed the new Lincoln/Ford....at least that was my take. They liked the MDX, but didn't love it.

There was a commercial for MKX on NBC a couple of times last night. It looked way worse than I remember it in the pics posted here.

I don't know what it is about Lincolns but they seem to rattle about twice as much as the comparable Fords. Dealers also seem to charge 3-4 times more for everything. Friend of mine needed a new keyfob for his Navigator and they wanted $120. Ford dealer was $28.

In terms of the first year reliability, I think it all depends on the manufacturer. I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Ltd.- first year or this generation. 97,000 miles so far - no problems whatsoever. I also had a second year VW Passat - that fell apart after 100K - engine, electric system, transmission, pipes, etc.
jedi
The Montero is a greatly under rated vehicle. I drove a "88" Montero till 170,000. Replaced the cylinder head and drove it another 60,000 miles. My comments on first year vehicles were directed at American, not foreign vehicles.

Thanks for heads up, Jedi. I had no prior experience with Monteros. I am planning to keep it for a while. Too bad that Mitsu could not figure out the next generation properly and pulled out Montero from the US market...
jedi
 You would think that a company like Mitsu would develop their suv into a killer product. The basics are there and they have plenty of experience in what makes a good SUV. A real lack of forsight on their part. Mitsu's loss is Acura's gain. My ''07" MDX Sport should be in the last week of Nov.

I happend to tune in to a couple of football games yesterday and on one of them noticed that Lincoln is now calling the new SUV an MKZ... Maybe MKX was too close to MDX.

Their advertising isn't effective if you didn't notice that the MKZ is their sedan, and not their SUV (which is the MKX). :)

Wow. I missed that distinction. I must not have been paying very close attention. Thanks for the correction.

Sorry, but the price difference isn't anywhere near $10,000. I wrote a specialized price comparison program, and when the Lincoln is equipped like a base MDX it lists for just $1,835 less. And if you adjust for feature differences (including $600 for the third row seat) they end up close to dead even.

I don't see Lincoln pulling off pricing parity with the MDX. Rebates coming.

The amenities in the new Lincoln are nice ... the price is pretty solid for them as well. Personally I just don't care for the front grill at all or really the overall look. Fuel economy for the AWD is 18/24 ... just like the RX 350 (who Lincoln is taking dead aim at). For a while I was thinking about a new RX and looked at how many more features I could get on the Lincoln for less money and it made me think ....

Then I went and test drove the MDX and it's all I can think about :)

I haven't driven the Lincoln yet, but I have driven the Ford Edge. It doesn't handle nearly as well as the MDX.

The two Worst cars I ever owned were both Lincolns. More warranty work than any car I have driven. Shortly after the warranties expired...so did they. Never Again!
