| Sorry if this question is dumb but whats the difference between sealant and wax? Winter is coming soon so I wanna know the best way to protect my MDX...Should I use both wax and seal after washing the X or should I just do either one? If either one, which one is better for protecting the X from the winter snow/salt/etc.? |

Generally speaking, wax to refers to products with some amount of carnauba in them. Sealant refers to products that are made entirely of synthetic polymers.
Again, generally speaking, you will get better, longer protection from a synthetic (months versus weeks). A wax may only last 6 or 8 weeks, a sealant for 4 months or more. The benefit of the wax is a deeper, "better" shine than a sealant. Some sealants on some colors can look plastic or artificial.
If you do both, you'll want to apply a wax on top of your sealant, not under it.
You will get more value from spending some time and prepping your paint. Wash it with a good car wash soap. Clay bar it to remove contaminants and other surface foreign bodies. Apply a paint cleanser (with a buffer) and optionally a glaze to get the paint as close to perfect as you can. Then finish her off with a nice finishing product (sealant or wax). You'll love it!
Lots of Zaino nuts around here, but I like Klasse AIO, Four Star Cleanser and UPP, and the Prima product line (all available on-line or locally at detailing shops). Local parts places tend to carry Mothers, Meguiars, Turtle Wax, etc., which aren't bad, but you can do better....
Good luck to you! |
