Just got the recent consumer reports issue in which they ran a "Luxury 3-row SUV shootout". They even included wagons but not the MDX. I wonder why ??
Heck I think they even included the Pilot but not the MDX!

Maybe they couldn't get their hands on an 07 and thought including an 06 would be moot since the 07 is a redesign?

I'm sure it's because they didn't have an '07 to include, and the '06 is going away so no point to include it.

But does it really matter what CR thinks? As I recall, they judged Old Milwaukee the best beer in America. CR continues to be less relevant as time goes on.

I think CR thinks that MDX is not a luxury vehicle since it costs less that 45000. If we look at their list of luxury vehicles, all of them cost above 55k.

Yeah, I was anxiously awaiting that too. But the reviews they did are for the newer models, and the current MDX has been around for some time. CR has to purchase these vehicles in order to review them, and the 07 was not out at the time of publication.

Can you give us a feel for the results of the test/comparison?

THanks!

The article isn't a "shootout." It just happened to have five luxury SUV's with three rows in it. The old MDX was tested previously, and they wouldn't re-test something they've already done.

The MB GL450 did well, as did the R500 (which CR says isn't quite an SUV, isn't quite a minivan). The Volvo XC90 V8 was behind, and the Audi Q7 behind it, and the Escalade at the bottom.

They would have included the 2007 MDX but it hadn't shipped yet by the time they ran their tests.

According to CR's "road test score," the old MDX would have been ranked behind the XC90 V8, and somewhere around the Q7. That's pretty good considering the age of the old design. YMMV -- not everyone likes CR's road testing.

More importantly, NONE of the five luxury SUV's tested by CR earned their "recommended" checkmark -- all because of reliability concerns. The five vehicles were either too new to have reliability histories (GL450, Q7, Escalade), or have already earned terrible reliability ratings (R500, XC90). Obviously this is only important to those who listen to CR reliability scores. But I'll bet the GL450, Q7, and Escalade will end up with bad reliability scores anyway.

Wagons were listed in a matrix because the issue includes updates on several wagons.

I, for one, to attach some value to CR's work. They have been helpful in my choices of vehicles in the past, and have proven correct.

I read their reviews and recommendations, along with several other sources, while recently in the market for a replacement SUV. Sold a 99 QX4 which was underpowered, but nice for its time. (That vehicle was purchased in a hurry, after I totaled another, thanks to a drunk driver that got in my way) I found this source after making my purchase. Bought a 2004 MDX Touring/NAV with 18k on it. So far, I have been nothing but pleased with it. Very comfortable, quiet on the road, reasonable gas mileage, considering the engine/weight/etc.

Have already had opportunity to check out warranty service - warped brake rotors. They were very kind and helpful.

Considering the $$ I have spent for this vehicle, I sincerely hope that it proves to be a smart choice. CR rated the MDX very highly, so that was a big part of my final decision. Bought the vehicle sight-unseen, over the internet. That was a first for me!

It's because Acura isn't considered a "luxury" brand.

It's called, "Near-Luxury", for some reason.
