i was changing my tranny fluid today and was just curious how would a dealer change my tranny fluid.
i looked at the OIL JET KIT they installed for the 2001 tranny recall and i found that the rubber tubing is kinked!
so my oil jet kit is basically non functional
i had it installed around 39K miles if i can remember it right
i have 61k now
i do notice occasional surging around 40-45MPH since last year but none lately

will try to contact the dealer and hopefully they'll
fix it without charge

It is a great photo but where is this hose located. Can you give more information.

i'll inspect my car soon too, i believe its located on top of the transmission. they installed it on my car about 7-8 thousand miles ago, so i wouldnt know if time was the issue or not, and i have barely drove the mdx this year, so i wouldnt feel surging like the first guy said.

if i notice a bend ill cal lthe dealer about it too

the hose is part of the oil jet kit is attached to the tranny oil fill plug
it's located about 6 inches behind/aft the battery and below
my angle of view when taking the picture was on top fo the battery pointing down towards the back and middle of the engine bay

the size of the rubber tube is about half inch diameter and 4 inches long. it's used to connect a metal tube coming from the top of the tranny fill plug to another metal tube going back to the tranny

will try a wider shot when the lighting is better
i wish i had checked this earlier though

^ yea seems as though youve been driving on it for a while. im lucky ive put my car in for hibernation since gas had went out of control forcing me to use the lighter duty car.

and yea, i see the same issue as you. its as though the design does not give the hose enough slack to really bend, and forced it crease.

If i find time on wed while at work, i'll contact Acura on the Issue:3:

more pictures where to locate the tranny oil jet kit
all taken looking down the engine bay

sorry for the poor lighting
tonight i just used a flahlight for lighting and set my camera's iso to 3200. too lazy to grab my flash

i have scheduled my car for next week.
I was not able to ask if it will be a free fix because i was not talking to a service person, just a scheduler i guess

since the recall, i've been changing my tranny fluid more often than required. Actually a lot easier than an oil change

Luckily, I did not see any metal chips, nor the fluid to be dark nor burnt smell but there was a lot of black gunky stuff on the drain plug magnet on this last fluid change.

good thing about the dealer i go to is they're very generous with an acura loaner car. They give me a new TL all the time
Maybe i can test drive a 2007MDX too (hopefully)

^ glad you do all that maintence on the X, i think ill do my change soon, just bought a case of tranny fluid from another user on V6P.net, how much to drain and how much to fill? and should i get a magnetic drain plug?

im glad you have a nice dealer, my dealer is stingy, and lets me walk to school, a brisk mile walk in this cooling ny weather *sigh*

Re: "black gunky stuff"

When you get the work done, can you, or ask the shop to, take a look at the insides of the old rubber tube ? Kind of curious about the long-term effects of transmission fluid on the tube inner wall - whether it softens/dissolves it and adds junk into the circulating fluid.

^ now you guys got me concerned! lol

im thinking about replacing my hose with something longer, and looping it so there is no sharp turn bend, sorta like turning 270 degrees to go 90 degrees if you catch my drift.

any recommendations on what kinda hose to use? i remember dealing with similar kinda hose in my accord when i was working on the radiator. im guessing anything that cna hold decent pressure and temperature.

and im doing this to avoid going to the dealer...in NY they are jerks and will call you up in a matter of minutes after youve left the dealer to say "oh btw you should replace......"

i actually tried to removed the hose and plan to rotate 90 degrees but the location is too tight for me with a pair of pliers. But since i need to bring my car in for front spring recall and vibration at 70-80MPH, i decided to just bring it in and save my knuckles
i do like to change my cars oils because I drain them overnight
i'm sorry your dealer are such jerks. I've been lucky to have a nice dealer here in Tampa. I did not even buy the car from them.

the MDX holds 4 quarts(not exact but it's what i use) of tranny fluid.
The drain plug comes standard with a magnet i guess to keep the metal shavings from recirculating to the system
If you have changed your engine oil before yourself, you will be surprised how easy also to change the tranny fluid. The hardest part is finding or fabricating adevice to fill through the dipstick.

tl_mdx
the black gunky stuff is what is usually the collected fine metal shavings i believe. I have them every time i change my tranny fluid
I'll try to remember to ask the dealer to show me the rubber

i just came back from Acura dealer to have my OIL JET KIT recall checked. It was done in 2004 and last week i noticed that the rubber tubing used in the oil jet kinke is kinked.
they told me this is normal according to the service manager.
i called the acura customer service and told me to go to another dealer for a second opinion.
i told her the tube is obviously kinked and my warranty is expired (61000 miles). What happens if my tranny fails. And she gave me the lip service that my complain was noted on my record connected to my VIN number. If my tranny fails, they will make a case.

so now i don't know if i wish my tranny would fail right now just to prove my point or just keep taking extra precaution like chnaging the fluid every 15,000mi or sooner(which actually i'm doing)

2001 MDX OWNERS pls check your oil jet kit recall if this is normal

thanks

A simple fix is to put a 5/8" hose clamp on the kink; my MDX has only a slight kink in the hose...........a very poor/cheap design; should have been a formed hose (a couple of $'s more for Honda!). Then the MDX is not really a luxury vehicle................
brakes that clump, lots of road noise
(no insulation!) and high effort power steering.

thanks 4 the tip

i actually bought a needle nose vise grip and removed the hose myself
rotated the rubber hose about 90 degrees and reinstalled it
the service manager called me and wanted to look at it again but i already fixed it before they called me

heres the photo of the tubing. So far it's been ok

My tranny was replaced by the dealer at 28k miles. They claimed that the tranny failed and wouldn't let me take the car back for safety reason. So, I have a replacement tranny on my MDX.

Now I have 42k miles. (14k miles on this replacement tranny.)

After reading your post, I checked mine. The tube has a smooth circular turn and does not have the problem like yours. Maybe it's because it's a replacement tranny.

I now plan to change the tranny fluid every 10k miles. I've done once on this replacement tranny. I don't see metal shaving.

What concerns me most is the color of the fluid came out. It has this purple color in it. It's not complete purple but does have the purple shinny characteristic. This color shows both on the original tranny and the replacement tranny. I took used fluid to Pepboys to dispose. The tech there also says it's purple and says he's never seen tranny fluid being purple. He's seen oil being purple. I've changed rear differential oil on other vehicles before. This purple color does resemble the differential gear oil.

I wonder why it's purple. I understand that we can't change the fluid in the transaxle (front differential) in a 2002 MDX because there is no drain plug. Can this be the mix of tranny fluid with the front differential (transaxle) fluid? I think the transaxle (front differential) shares the same fluid with tranny.

If there are two different kinds of fluid in the tranny, something is very wrong with 2001/2002 MDX tranny design.
