I noticed that Costco is again selling 100-light strings of "C-7" LED Christmas lights. They have plastic jeweled bulbs. Their brand name is "Forever Bright," made by a Hong Kong company.
For years I've run a few strings of colorful C-7 bulbs outside of the house. They are very bright, consume a good amount of electricity, and can be a pain -- a few burned out bulbs every year, an occasional shattered bulb when hanging them up.
Question for folks who bought these lights in previous years -- do you like them? Were they bright enough, or were you disappointed?
Also, I know that the LED's last for years and years. But if one of the lights were to burn out, would the whole string go dead? The website (www.holidaycreations.com) says that they specifically make their lights to be non-replaceable.
Thanks in advance! |

I replaced our icicle lights with regular C-7's last year...or was it C-9 ? I felt guilty not getting LED's but the light they cast is just not the same. To me, it seems like less light and not the familiar warm tone as with the incandescent.
All lights seem to have cheap wiring and I figured even though the LED bulbs felt very solid, eventually they're going to short out and not be worth the extra expense. On the other hand, the LED's probably wouldn't spin the electric meter like these did...sheesh. I hope I'm not responsible for the construction of another nuclear plant. |

Some follow-up in case anyone here is decorating for the holidays, and is considering buying the Costco LED C-7 Christmas lights.
I bought two strings to try them out. They're "cute," but they are definitely much dimmer than conventional C-7 bulbs. The string is very long, over 60 feet, so I just wrapped the strings around some small trees and bushes for effect.
However, for the line of lights across the front of the house, I stuck with my old strings of incandescent C-7's. Sure, I had some burned out bulbs I had to replace, and they burn a lot more electricity, but the LED's still aren't as good yet.
One nice thing about the LED's is that they don't run hot like the incandescent C-7's. |
