My 03 will need new tires soon, and my wifes 03 Explorer needs them now. I need to find a tire that will do well in the snow (up to 18"), and also handel well on the dry pavement. I drive my MDX like a spors car, and want to make sure my car still handles well. the handling is less important on my wifes car, and I don't mind buying two different types.

So, any suggestions?

thanks

There's been good feedback on the Goodyear Forteras.

If you can find them in your size I would say Fortera Triple Treads would be good. I have them on my Pilot.

I will look into those. Would the be a good replacement for both the Ford and the MDX? How good are they in the snow? Do they handle on dry like a sports car? :-)

Thanks

Well I think you need two sets of tires then:D If I was looking for a combo of snow and dry performance, triple tread would be at the top from what I have seen. Triple tread will probably be the best snow performance of any all-season tire (dedicated winter tires I am sure would be better). I haven't had mine in the snow yet (although the Silent Armors on my MDX have been good the everyone says that the Triples are better in snow). Triples are not as quiet as SilentArmors but they handle better IMO.

Do a search on snow tires for all sorts of info. If I lived in CO, I'd have two sets of wheels. One for summer and one for winter. Heck, I live in CA and I have that (but I drive to the snow every weekend all winter). With a 2nd set of wheels, you don't feel risky when you let your summer tires wear down to the wear bars. In winter I don't like my tires to have anything less than 50% of tread left - especially with all season tires.

In Colorado, I'd get two sets if you venture into the mountains at all. I just picked up some Dunlop Grandtrek M2 winter tires from Tire rack. Haven't tried them yet, but they don't look to be a very agressive winter tire. I am hoping the dry handling is good, as well as the highway performance. The main reason I buy winter tires is not for the tread, but the rubber compound. When it is cold, an all season can't hold a candle to a winter tire.

I had 2 sets of tires when I had my BMW 330Ci, but one of the reasons's I went with the MDX over the FX35 was because I didn't want to mess with snow tires. I havn't had time to research them yet, but I will look into the triple treads.

Are those the best for the explorer too? Should I look at something else for it?

thanks

Ok, I've called around and talked to the tire rack. I think everyone has a different oppinion, or what they are trying to say.

I have been told the triple tread doesn't do very well in the snow. Is there anyone out there that has driven it in snow?

Also, does anyone know anything about the following 3?

bridgstone dueler hl alenza
yokahama - geolander hts
michellin - ltxm&s

Thanks,

Geolander is a total POS in snow. Even brand new they have trouble - after a few thousand miles you'll be happy if you have a tow strap in the back because you'll need it to get someone to pull you out of a snowbank.

Can't comment on the others, but if the Michelin is a M&S tire, it should be decent in the snow. Again with the caveat that IME tires like that are good down to roughly 1/2-2/3 of their tread life. After that you'll want new ones.
