Well that nice, you can pretty much hit the Mag Mile. And you thank your lucky stars you won't have to worry bout parking but it will be freezing so close to the lake.
You can
Downtown
1. Shedd Aquarium
2. Field Museum
3. Art Institute
4. Museum of Contemporary Art
5. Adler Planetarium
6. Sears Tower Observatory
7. Hancock Building Observatory/Signature Room
8. Millenium Park. Website: »www.millenniumpark.org/
9. Grant Park
Of course all the stores along the Mile and small shops in the same vicinity.
Are you willing to travel to the surrounds parts of the city and subs? |

I have been to the Shed and Field museum but the kids were pretty little and they would probably enjoy it much more now. Are there days when there is no admission fee? And as far as traveling to the subs, our original plan was to just stick to staying within the city but if there was something worthwhile to do elsewhere I would definitely be open to it. Thanks for your help!! |

Unfortunantly the days of free are gone. But they have a "Go Chicago Card" which lets you into alot of places.

I just realized that you are coming in dec so you'll want to mostly do indoor stuff. I think the Go chicago deal seems decent. |

You should strongly consider the Museum of Science and Industry, too. You could spend all day - coal mine, submarine tour, IMAX, flight simulator, etc. - and it's perfect for kids 6 and 9. I practically grew up there. It used to be free every day, but that ended years ago...
In terms of food, need more guidance on what you're looking for. Chicago has some of the best - hell, only - real Mexican in the country. But tons of other great choices. |

As you can imagine our choice of food here in South Dakota is somewhat limited so we are looking for something that we could never find here in our neck of the woods. I have never been to a Greek rest. before, do you recommend any? And what would you suggest as far as Mexican goes?? (I've been to countless Mexican restaurants before but I'm sure none of them serve what I would call "authentic" Mexican food!!) Thanks so much for your help!! >Jason |

My favorite Mexican restaurant is Nuevo Leon in Pilsen (South 18th Street just East of Ashland). Really solid working class food at stupid cheap prices (almost everything under $10, much of it closer to $5). Perfect for kids. Used to be only Mexican families and cops, but now popular with the gringos - luckily the place hasn't changed a bit. If you're over that way, you should also check out the Mexican Fine Arts Museum, another good detour off the beaten track.
Higher-end Mexican there's always Frontera Grill downtown (you may have seen the bottled sauces under their name in supermarkets). Rick Bayless, the owner, is credited with bringing broad recognition in the U.S. to the variety and complexity of regional Mexican cooking. Reservations are a must.
For Greek, I'm partial to Santorini in Greektown (though Greek Islands is ok as well) Has great grilled seafood. I would stay away from the Pathenon - used to be THE place to go, but has been resting on its laurels for many years.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip! |
