I posted about this problem previously, but now after 3 days at the dealership, I am back where I started.
I have a clanking noise from the front end when turning left or right at very slow speeds. This does not appear to happen when accelerating or hitting a bump, just basic slow speed turning, in forward or reverse.
The service department applied the TSB that applied to "the thud" and also tried adjusting the calipers on the front disks. After trying all of this, they say that this is normal for all MDXs.
Does anyone have the same noise or are they just blowing smoke? |

Smoke.
Would you kindly tell us which dealer? |

Thanks.
Question(s) re: your symptoms --
Is the steering wheel full lock (turned all the way when this occurs?
Can you feel it through the steering wheel?
Could you characterize is as rattle or chattering? |

The noise occurs when turning the wheel towards full lock. It seems most noticeable when turning the wheel 1/2 way to full lock and when maneuvering into a parking space (small turns at slow speed).
Its so hard to characterize noise, but it sounds the same as if two metal components needed lubrication and were banging together.
I'm wondering if this is normal for the MDX normal, a problem that is acknowledged by other service departments or one that I have been "fortunate" enough to encounter.
I've previously owned numerous vehicles, including 4 wheel drives and have never heard sounds from the front end when turning the wheel at low speed. |

Hmmm...too bad you didn't answer "yes" to any of those since those are the symptom troubleshooting Q's from the service manual.
Ours doesn't make that noise (although my old Heep Grand Cherokee use to make an audible and tactile POP and CLUNK when turning at full lock @ low speeds -- it felt like one of the wheels was going to fall off. Sooooo glad I leased that car.).
Anyway, here are some possibilities:
- rattle or chattering: check for loose tie-rod and ball joints; check steering column shaft for wobble; check rack guide adjustment; check power steering pump pulley and shaft.
Those are the only ones that might be close, aside from a nail or screw in the tire, which also makes that noise... |
