MDX is approaching it's sixth birthday and 67k miles so I decided to be proactive and replace the OEM Delphi battery before it left us stranded in the dead of winter. After researching Consumers Reports and verious websites, I finally went with a Duralast Gold from Auto Zone for $74.88 + tax. Swapped out the batteries on their parking lot in about 15 minutes so I could return the OEM for the core refund. Here are the specs for the Duralast Gold:
750 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
935 CA (cranking amps)
3-year free replacement warranty
8-year limited warranty
I have to admit I was going to purchase an Optima Red Top since putting one in one of my previous Corvettes but since the price had jumped to $149, I could not justify the price difference for similar performance from the Duralast. Just thought I'd share. |

of course not before my wife called me while I was away on business travel stating the battery was dead...
The OEM ones just shoot craps all at once. This one was about 5 years and 71,000 miles old.
I saved 30 bucks and got the middle Duralast 24F which has 2 year replacement 84 month pro-rated warranty.
The autozone store was helpful in swapping out the battery. |

Wife called today while picking up the little one from day care...."honey, the car just goes click, click, click".
I jumped her car and immediately bit the bullet to buy a Diehard Gold from Sears. $89 for a Grp 24F. Fit is identical to OEM, but with 700 CCA, a three year replacement, and 100 month prorated warranty.
When it comes to putting in a new battery to insure that the wife and rugrat don't get stuck, I'll stick with Diehard Gold. I've never had one go out in less than 5+ years.
We got 3 years and one month/50k miles out of the OEM. I can't complain to much but that is on the short end of battery longevity from my experience. |
