| Has anyone ever painted the muffler on any car? This 03 MDX I bought looks like new, until you see that huge rusted looking muffler hanging down behind the right rear wheel. I am thinking about buying a can of that 1200 or 1500 degree black spray paint and giving it a try. I see on the internet that people have done so with success. Has anyone had experience doing that? Thanks. Tom |

The paint on my old 2003 did the same thing and I had no problem using black spray paint to give it that "new" look again.
I'm not sure why it looked so bad after 30,000 miles, but whatever, the spray paint did the trick.
We'll see how the new-for-2004 dual exhaust pipes hold up in my 2006... |

| I may still get the high heat paint and finish the job, but just sanding it gently with a very fine grit sandpaper took the rust color off and returned the black color, so it already looks more like new. Anyway, it took me about two minutes to remove the rust color with the sandpaper. One word of caution though, where I sanded too much, I took the black coating off and it is down to a more shiny metallic color. Tom |

You might just want to go ahead and resand and paint it, it is just bare metal, it will flash rust then the rust will go to work on your muffler. |

A few months ago I noticed my exhaust system standing out too. No rust, but oxidation. I'm a little disappointed in how low the pipes hang from the undercarriage. Looking at the X from behind you see the 2 pipes hanging to the sides of the rear pumpkin.
I found some flat black high heat barbecue paint and shot it around the mufflers and pipes. Now they don't catch your eye as much as before. |

I painted the mufflers on my Accord and MDX with high temp black. Have no issues at all. Also, I painted my tailpipe black on the Accord. When I wash my cars, I just spray them, and it looks like new.
Have both cars since 2005 and no rust or oxidation on the muffler or tail pipes. |

They can't even paint a $48,000 vehicles mufflers ! I've not got around to painting them yet as I'm still working on detailing the car. What has been keeping me from finishing is I came down with a nastly cold the day after I bought the X and it's too cold out right now!

I just checked and my '03 with almost 52,000 miles doesn't have any rust on the exhuast.
I used to drive an '88 CRX Si and the muffler came painted from the factory. Around 7 years later some of the paint flaked off and I masked and sprayed with flat black Hot Paint which I believe was rated up to 1500 degree F. That did the trick and looked good. |

| Finally painted the muffler on my 03 with Rustoleum High Heat paint to get rid of that rusty appearance. The light sanding I had done made a big improvement, but the paint still helped. Since I did not have a "before" picture, I have attached a picture of another MDX with a muffler that looks like a lot of MDXs with this problem. I have also attached two "after" pictures (and yes, I know I need to wash the MDX, but it has been too cold and wet). Tom |

| I'm thinking of swapping my stock black painted mufflers with some nice polished 304 stainless ones. Do you think it would be too over-the-top or distracting? |

Is that the muffler or catalytic converter? |
|
|
| Fabvsix |
| probably the converter. Running boards might hide it bit but I like the "sleek" look of it without all that jazz...besides the new X is lower and don't feel the need for running boards. I may just get the sun roof visior... |

I noticed you have a touring which came with the "Y" split and 2 original mufflers. So the muffler shop basically cut it past the CAT and welded a new extension. How does the muffler sound? I've seen some of the stainless models that the kids put on their "rice burners" that are straight through. |

QRTLOW,
My MDX is a 2002 Touring edition. It originally came with only the single OEM muffler. My local muffler shop installed the Hayame EXT Stainless Steel Muffler in its place. The sound is definitely louder and more aggressive. For me, that's what I was looking for. The other benefit in having a stainless steel muffler is longevity. My MDX is going on four and a half years now. The Hayame EXT still looks bright and shiny, with no signs of rust.:D |
