Floor jack too short - Click HERE for Original Thread

Has anyone ever heard of an extender to raise the saddle part of a floor jack? I searched the web and can't seem to find anything that will make my old Craftsman 2.5 ton floor jack taller. The saddle that is on this jack is just held on with a cotter pin, so all I need is a taller one to fit in the hole. This jack goes up to 15 inches, but apparently I need 19-20 inches to lift the MDX's tires off of the ground. I do not want to go buy a second jack if I do not have to. Any ideas? Thank you. Tom

What lift point are you using?

The safest and best solution is to purchase a new jack. Anything done to modify the one you have to gain that much more lift would not be safe, in my opinion. I work with spine and brain injuries, and would hate to see anybody end up in my unit from something like this.

I agree that it is very important to be safe and I don't plan to do anything that would be too risky, that is why I was hoping there would be an extension that would just replace the old saddle. As for the lift point, I was just using the place behind the front tire, like for changing a flat. Tom

I agree 100%. Just go to Costco and buy yourself a new floor jack to service your MDX. They are better than any mod you could do to your present floor jack. Safety first.:4:

When using a floor jack to lift up your MDX, it is best to use the jack points in the front and back of your vehicle as per the owner's manual. That way you can lift your MDX correctly and place jack stands under the places just behind the front tires and just forward of the rear tires.

I guess I am stuck with getting a new jack. But, Excaliber, are you saying there are jacking points in the front and rear? All my manual (2003) refers to are the points on the sides a few inches behind the front wheel wells and a few inches in front of the rear wheel wells? Did I just misunderstand what you said or am I missing something here? Tom

Thanks JimH for reposting the link for that old thread on jacking points.:29:

Finally got my new taller and stronger 3 ton jack for the MDX. Hard to believe how much different (weaker) the old 2.5 ton jack looks, huh? Now I feel like a serious DIYer. Tom

Not sure why the pic did not work the first time. Tom

I am late to this party, you did the right thing getting the proper jack. I have a 3.5 ton Michelin from Sam's that looks similar.

I will add, NEVER rely on one system for jacking even with a jack as nice as yours is. Murphy's Law and the Law of Unintended Concequensces may converge and send one to the boneyard (if one is lucky).

ALWAYS place good jackstands under the subframe in addition to the jack, I have 6 ton Goodyear stands (12,000 pounds each) from Sam's (about $50)

Also, remove the jack handle after the jack is set. Wifey or the kids can fall over that handle and create a real disaster for you and the car and hurt themselves.

I too thank you. I printed it this time.

Now, is I just had some reason to jack up the vehicle.

Kings, not all jacks have handles that are readily removable. Mine is an example.

Thanks for the safety tips, and I will definitely use jack stands if I ever get under the SUV or lift the entire front or rear end. But, I just use the floor jack to rotate the tires, lifting each corner as I go. Of course I have to use the spare in this process of rotating the tires. As for the oil and trans. fluid, I can do those without even raising the SUV (or our Odyssey) off the ground. Honda made the plug and filter easy to reach with the right front tire turned hard to the right. Tom

Tom, that's the nice thing about an SUV, I did the oil, diff, and transfer case without having jack it. I can't imagine doing the 05 Ody without ramps even with my Fumoto drain valve. You must have a narrow head or mine is fat (perhaps the 05 is lower). GC, that is a different jack with a fixed handle, learn something new everyday.

The filter is indeed an easy reach on the MDX, but the 05 Ody is tough because there is a subframe member right below the filter, so tight you can barely fit a wrench and could never use an oversized filter. On the 04 MDX the filter is an easy unrestricted reach and amenable to an ovrsized filter. My 05 Ody has a filter about the size of a lawnmower filter, a good reason for 3K oil changes which I loathe. Below is the Fumoto valve.
