An aquaintance of mine got one of the first 2007 MDXs in this area and immediately took it on a long trip. This involved some trailer towing that was well within the ratings of the vehicle. Shortly after getting back, it started shifting hard, lurching, and hanging in gears. He took it in and after a few days the dealer told him that the transmission had failed and they would be replacing it. This after only 7200 miles.

I hope this is an isolated incident and not the start of ANOTHER round of Acura transmission problems!

I sure hope it's not another tranny issue, but aren't you supposed to break in the vehicle first before you do any serious towing like that? And 7200 miles already? Hasn't the 07 only been out for a month? Something fishy about the story...

I'm gonna go with dj-mdx2 on this; 1) Break-In Period on a brand spankin' new vehicle 2) 7200 in one month or less  !? Where the heck did your friend go!? From Cali to NYC and back  !? Yeah, that might create some issues.

While 7k miles in a month seems really high....I think it might be possible.

Was any towing done during the break-in period though? That's what I want to know.

It is recommended that you avoid rapid starts and stops and vary your speed for the first 600 miles for break in. So it would be a problem if towing occured during the first 600 miles. If they immediately went on a long trip, then 7,200 miles is possible in a month. Every few years I drive to from MA to Florida in less than 20 hours and the distance is 1200 miles. That's an average of 60 mph. 7200 miles is 120 hours at 60 mph. That's 15 days of 8 hour driving. A lot but do-able.

What does breaking in have to do with the transmission? I have always thought it's the engine that requires breaking in, hence the varying speed to seat the piston rings properly.

He and his family took a round-circle cross country trip for three weeks upon receiving it. I know him and it is legit. They picked up the trailer on the east coast when the X had about 3,000 miles on it so break-in should not have been an issue.

You have to realize, recently Acura's quality is only marginal. To many people's disappointment, it's relatively brittle compared with other SUVs. It has minimal 4x4 capacity. I believe the engineer designed it assumed that you will not really abuse a "luxurious" SUV with some real life 4x4 driving. So, you have to take good care of it instead ask it to act like a real one.

I hope this is an isolated issue also. My friend is at the point to buy one. I will tell him to hold it for anohter couple months, do not become the test driver for Acura.

It's a shame that Acura's quality makes people worry about possible problems and makes customers wait so some others can test drive it to prove it's worry free....

Shame on you Acura!!!

Acura/Hondas predicted reliability in mid-sized SUV's is actually second only to Toyota/Lexus according to CR's reliability surveys - even with the weak tranny included in the survey results. That says a lot about it's competition (quality is relative). That said, I'd never buy first year anything because the odds are much higher that you will have problems.

I bet the CR surveys would look a lot different if the vehicles were all towing right to their quoted capabilities. I wouldn't buy an MDX if I needed to do any appreciable amount of towing.

I agree I wouldn't buy the vehicle as a tow vehicle. But I would bet that most mid-sized SUVs aren't used for heavy duty towing. Those that really need heavy duty tow vehicles buy trucks or large SUVs. At least the people I know do. A lot of the MDX trannies failed without the owners towing anything. However, there are many more Pilots sold and they likely see near the same percentage of owners towing as the MDX (probably higher) and there are very few Pilot tranny failures - even though it had the 2001/2002 MDX tranny up until 2006. A lot more Pilot owners do take them off-road also.

i just bought a 2007 mdx and it only has 600 miles on it. don't know if it's an issue with the tranny but when i'm sitting in traffic, with foot off the accelerator, letting the car roll, it's really jerky as if it was searching for a gear. it only seems to be a problem at low speeds, below 25mph... once the speed picks up, it's silky smooth once again. any thoughts?

This is absolutely correct!
