Now that I am out of warranty I am going to try to "upgrade" my audio system. This set of posts will be my log for all other owners that want to attempt to upgrade factory to factory radios.

Proposed Tasks:

1. Change 2003 factory radio with NAV/RES to 2006 factory NAV/RES radio.

2. Create custom wiring harnesses to make the conversion back and forth easy (this is the plan)

3. Add XM radio (without the factory XM part) via TERK - connecting to the factory radio.

4. Provide everyone here Wiring diagrams and pin-outs for both the 2003 and 2006 radios. I have asked and looked to no avail.
Justasktony
Attached is a picture of the unopened (factory sealed) 2006 factory radio with NAV/RES option.

Attached is the back of the 2006 radio pins/plugs.

Ok, Pins on the back:

left to right

(Bottom) Grey - 1 square and 1 pin
(top) Green - 30 pin
(top) Green 16 pin
(bottom) Green 5 pin
(bottom) White 13 pin
(bottom) Black 20 pin

As of this minute, I have NO CLUE what these connect to!! There will now be a pause until I have more information.

(((Can ANYONE can help me identify each of the plugs and the connections????)))

..because each plug recepticle is different on the back of your new unit, that the various plugs on the vehicle's wiring harness would match those on the back of the unit and you shouldn't have to worry about what each does. If the plug(s) on the wiring harness are different than the ones on the back of the unit then you have a very different problem. In that case you would have to re-wire the vehicle's plugs to match those on the back of the unit. I doubt that they made such a significant change to the veh's harness when they made changes to your newer unit, but who knows. I think you will have to pull your unit from your '03 and compare them to be sure. If they match then just plug everything into the new unit and power it up to see if it works. If it doesn't, is your new unit returnable? I have an '03 and I don't know the advantages of your new unit over the '03's unit.

Good luck with this change and please keep us posted. If it's an easy switch-over some of use might be interested in doing a similar transplant.

Shop manual makes it very easy to figure all this stuff out. I paid $6 extra for the one that covers 2003-2006 - it has the wiring for the plugs for every year, for every audio/Nav/RES system option offered.

I am waiting for the 2003-2006 one to come in the mail. I have the 2003 if anyone wants to buy that one. I listed here before I go to Ebay.....

So, looking at the comparision between the 2003 and the 2006 year, NOT ONE PLUG matches!

quite the task you have going there.

..since a member has so gratiously posted what the '03 radio pins are, to figure out what the pins are on the back of the replacement '06 unit. Now, I'm good at screwing in a lightbulb and pluging in a toaster but this is WAY beyond my skill level. As Dirty Harry once said, "A man's got to know his limitations."

Good luck on this one!!
Justasktony
On the back of the 2003 radio there are 4 connections+ ant. On the back of the 2006 radio there are 6 connections.

The next set of replies are the plugs in order, their wiring configuation and how they could be used together.

Question for members - Does anyone have a good source (besides Acura) for the Molex plugs and Metra harnesses?

I will start with Connector A (both models have a connector named "a")
Justasktony
I have been able to get the following connectors so far:

1. The 20 Pin Radio plug
2. The Antenna plug
3. XM / Musiclink plug/harness (picked up 2)
4. A Male 20 pin radio plug so I don't have to cut the factory wiring for sound.

(note I still need the 30, 16, and 5 pin GREEN connectors for the 2006 radio and also 3 more plugs to plug in my system for the 2003 X.)

Pulled a bunch of plugs from a number of Acura's and Honda's. Here is the one that fit the 5 pin connector!

Looks like the project is slowly coming along. Keep up the good work.

2006 Connector A
Justasktony
Looking at the Service Manual, there are 4 differences:

A1
A11
A12
A13
A14

All other wires are consistent and will allow an easy plug and play! The wires that are different are mostly Navi related.

after evaluation, A1, A13, A14 are the same. This leaves A11/A12 different.

In the 2003 A11 is the RG GRD and A12 is not used. In the 2006, A11 is the Remote Ground and A12 is the RG GRD. Looking at the wiring diagram. The remote ground is done at another location for the 2003. So, based on this information. I will add a wire to the plug on the X to splice in the Ground. I will leave all wires intact.

Connector A is basically plug and play - 2003 - 2006 is almost the same.

this is nice stuff, would like to see how it looks in the end

2006 Connector B

WOW! were to start. I am now going to rewrite a wiring diagram to figure out how to route these different changes.

This connector is the most complex and challenging of the project.

As soon as I finish connector B, I will update this post. Currently creating wiring diagrams and trying to figure how to molex this so the 2003 can be converted back with original plugs.

Thanks for the wire diagrams. I'm trying to add an additional screen that will mirror the OEM RES. If I am not mistaken, all I need to do is tap on Connector B the NTSC out and NTSC shield/ground and I should be good. Any thoughts?

It looks like it. If the RR (rear) output goes from the radio, that should be the video signal.
