Wow, we are getting it replaced.

$4950 but we do get a loaner and front end alignment. That is a bunch since this car bought new only has a blue book of about 10000-11000 given it's current mileage of 135M though the transmission problems started right at 100M.

We are very high mileage drivers averaging about 30M per year.

Here is my list of worst to best cars by endurance owned over the years and 80% of them were bought new.

1995 Buick Rivera - blew tranny at 76M
Toyota VanWagen - Piston rod bolt at 101M
2002 Acura MDX - Tranny failure beginning at 100M
Volve 760 - blew piston at 155M
4 Toyotas - No drive train problems and all above 160M. One was junked though the engine and transmission were perfect.
2 Datsun 280Z's. Sold both over 125M with solid drive trains.

No kidding, the ultimate endurance winner and we still have it since we need to haul three big dogs.

Bought new, 1993 Ford Aeostar stretch AWD, 4.0 V6. 278M with no drive train problems! Yup, engine and tranny are untouched!

Overall, I have to rate the MDX from an endurance point of view with a C-. Bet you can guess which company gets our business this year when we dump the MDX.

Was there any discussion about Acura picking up some of the cost?

Double Wow

We did not ask for anything nor complain about anything. Acura got us the transmittion including installation for about $1400. The dealship did manage to find about $1000 worth of stuff we did not know was a problem(!!!), but Acura certainly lessend the pain by a significant amount.

Thank you Acura.

But then you'd be rating the MDX on two known problem model years. That would be similiar to rating current Toyota/Lexus V6 vehicles badly based on previous models that required engine replacements due to sludge issues.

The problem with Ford is that you are just as likely to get a bad one as a good one. My parents were buying a new Explorer every year for three years in hopes of getting one that didn't have a ton of problems that Ford couldn't solve. Finally they gave up and actually bought a Hyundai Sante Fe that has been problem free for 3 years.

It's good to see that Acura stepped up and paid a good portion - good luck with it.

What is wrong with rating based on personal experience? That is the model kc135a owns and knows. Some are just too sensitive and overly defensive. After all, MDX is just a machine.

I'm not being overly defensive, just pointing out the fact that rating the current MDX based on a corrected problem of previous model years just means that you may rule out a perfectly reliable vehicle in future purchases. By the same logic, kc135a should not even consider buying Toyota/Lexus vehicles because of the huge engine sludge issue they had years ago that required engine replacements. I've had a both a lemon Acura and a lemon Toyota, but I don't rule out purchasing them in the future because they have solved their major problems. And given their reliability ratings, you have a much greater chance of getting a lemon with any other manufacturer.
