Thanks for the info, Jeff. I'd actually used a combination of KBB and what others were selling for on AutoTrader, eBay, etc., to come up with an initial price.
When I configure KBB for private party value of a 2004 MDX Touring w/Navigation and 31K miles, I see the following:
Excellent: $30,645
Good: $29,045
Fair: $26,910
I see close to the values you posted above when I view trade-in value, but I'd prefer to try to sell to an individual before taking the car to a wholesaler like CarMax. I think given the condition of the vehicle and the dealer-installed XM Commander/Blitzsafe, the original asking price is reasonable.
Thanks again!

Dear Scott:
In today's market, especially with the introduction of the 2007 MDX, there is a lag between KBB values and actual values.
From what I have seen, you are more likely to get excellent trade in from a private party and between poor and good from a dealer.
Before going further, you might want to get a firm offer from Car Max and then, if it is worth the extra bother, effort, time and aggravation, try to do better with a private party sale.
One thing going for you is the relatively low mileage. Normal for a three year old car is 36,000 miles, 12,000 miles per year.
Good Luck!

Scott, here in SoCal, that's actually a good price. KBB is only a guideline, it should never be taken as the market value for your vehicle. I understand you're from Austin, but in looking at our Orange County Autotrader, taking out the highest and lowest prices, the median price for a 2004 MDX is $30,590.
And from someone who's had several successful private sales, never take your car to CarMax. Be patient and wait for the right private buyer, the MDX has a great reputation and basically sells itself. Granted you'll need to be flexible on your final price, but obviously you're going to get much more than from CarMax or a dealer. Keep in mind that you've got the holidays coming up, so this may be a tougher time to sell.
A couple tricks for selling your vehicle that I've learned: in addition to Autotrader, put it in Craigslist (I've sold 2 vehicles from there), a local circulation paper (we have Recycler - free - here in SoCal), place ads in www.acurazine.com and www.honda-acura.net.com (people who are proven to choose Acura and Honda vehicles), and the 'ol reliable technique of placing your newly washed vehicle in a high traffic area with a For Sale sign on it (making sure it's in a demographic that would desire an MDX)...
Good luck and Happy Holidays! |

Just a couple of observations:
Kbb trade in value is pretty close to wholesale. That is what you can expect from a dealer.
Anything above that requires, as you point out, time and patience and aggravation.
How many times have you listed a car, made an appointment for it to be seen, set time aside and the buyer either does not show up or turns out to be a "dirt bag" looking to pay thousands less than you are willing to take?
Besides the time, aggravation involved, each month you keep the car, not only is the car continuing to depreciate, but you are losing money.
$29,000 at only 5% is $1450 per year or $120 per month of lost income.
There is an old adage that your first loss is you cheapest loss.

| I've never sold any of my cars at wholesale price. That defeats the purpouse of selling it privately. Just looks at your local classified private sales (non dealer) prices and it will give you an idea of what's a fair market price for your car. |

| Yeah. In the past two years I've sold my Lexus GS430 and my wife's BMW Z3 Roadster at private party prices. After posting in the local paper and on Craig's List I have several serious bites on the MDX at or marginally below my asking price and am hoping to have it closed in very short cycle. There's absolutely no need to drop to wholesale if you've maintained the car well which we do with all of our vehicles. Again, if I were looking for wholesale I'd just drive it to Carmax and have them deposit a check in my account tomorrow. I'd prefer to create a good deal for both myself and the prospective buyer. |
