I just got back from a road trip to the Yellowstone Rod Run. On the entire trip I only saw 2 MDXs, as opposed to dozens of new Explorers and as many Bravadas and Trail Blazers. Both MDXs were black.

But, I got to speak with both owners of the MDXs. The first was gassing up and only spoke long enough to say he has had no problems with his MDX and loved it.

But, the second one had pulled over to look at some elk and was willing to talk for a while, and he told me he has 2 (yes, two!) MDXs. Got the first Emerald Touring/Nav one last December, and got the second Black Base/non- Nav one in February. He was from California. He has had no problems with either, although the base model had a noisy driver side rear window motor.

He was driving the base model, that looked to be loaded with every dealer installed option. I grilled him on Thuds and radio buttons 5/6 and weeping mirrors and cracking leather and whistling kazoo noises. The bottom line was....he hadn't heard of such things, and didn't notice any of these problems on either of his MDXs.

Now, I am not saying he didn't have them...only that he said he didn't notice them.

So, I am wondering how many of you out there would have really been bugged by any of these problems if they had not been called to your attention on this site? Are these things subtle enough that you could have not been concerned about them otherwise?

He loved his MDXs and wasn't interested in this website. I am not saying he is ignorant for not reading these types of sites, but I am saying that in his case...ignorance is bliss.

Also, (this is somewhat unrelated)...but I asked him why he was driving the non-Nav (base) model on a road trip, and he said something that I had already discovered....there is more passenger leg room in base models without the power passenger seat than in the Touring Models. He said his co-pilot was long legged and preferred the extra travel the base model manual seat gave her. He also said the Navigation system is annoying to him, so he doesn't use it. He said something about it insists on you being in the lane it chooses, usually the slow lane, and it nags him constantly about it if he doesn't comply, so he just shuts it off. So, there wouldn't have been a benefit in bringing the other MDX on the road trip.

He also said he had towed a trailer up on his trip, and the trip computer said he had gotten 26.1 mpg.

I found his perspective and experiences very interesting.

So, has this site tainted your satisfaction level with your MDX?
BellTeck
I can honestly say NO but maybe I am the exepction to whatever rule or like one poster said .. my MDX is possesed.

I think this site is a GREAT idea and the feedback and conversations are wonderful. I only wish that Honda of America would assign someone to view this and answer questions and concerns. It would surely be a full time position and the person doing so would obviously have to have some type of technical and PR experience. I dont think Honda would do it because they try to push people with problems away as fast as they can.

TECK!

That's an interesting question, but for me it's just the opposite. I had found this site before I got my MDX so I knew what to expect. I could tell that some of the things people complained about wouldn't bother me.

So far about all I've noticed the weeping mirrors. I wish they'd find a fix, but I can live with it for now.

I think a lot of it depends on what you are used to driving. Our last car was an Eagle Vision with lots of problems, so what's not to like about the MDX? We love it!

(Of course, if I get the thud or need an engine rebuild, I reserve the right to retract this comment :))
ghm2112
If someone indeed has the thud and doesn't notice it they are either:

1. deaf
2. blissfully ignorant
3. playing the radio very loudly, or
4. in denial.

Ours started at about 5k mi and has gotten progressively louder and more disturbing. It goes into the shop thurs for the fix. we'll see.

I'm not sure if it makes it any easier knowing about problems ahead of time, but I DO like knowing about the solution (i.e., Acura TSBs) before I let the 'technicians' get their hands on my MDX. I intend to be an active client wrt making sure things are done properly and that additional 'oh-by-the-way' work is not done w/o my authorization.

As for Teck!, his rig is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, POSSESSED. Check out his 'Oil Leak' thread.

Happy Trails.

With apologies to BellTeck and anyone else who's had problems, I believe this site has ENHANCED my enjoyment of my MDX. I had kept up with this forum before I got my truck so I knew what to look for. I listened for the THUD (not there), checked my mirrors (yes, they weep), and dreaded the howling wind noise on my first highway trip (never happened). The glove box door doesn't fit exactly, but, bottom line, after 3000 miles--I love my MDX.

BTW, I think the greatest testimony to the MDX is that BellTeck still can enjoy his truck after his horrendous experiences. Either it's a great vehicle, or he's the most patient guy I've ever heard of (probably both).

I've asked myself this question before. I think I would have noticed the weeping mirrors and that would have annoyed me anyway. The orange peel paint I'm not sure. I think eventually I would have noticed that too. Those are really my only two issues (I can even top off my gas without a spill). So I think, on the whole I've actually enjoyed my MDX more for this site. And I'm sure that I have a whole lot more accessories as a result (good for you Tim--good for me too, as I'm sure I saved money).

Interesting question.

The mirror problem I definitely would have noticed but not “knowing” would have drove me crazy. The “thud” which I have only heard "some" kind of noise when hitting a depression in the road, I don’t think I would of worried to much about (I still don't). I have the rough idling on start up problem and that I will (would) bring to the dealer attention regardless of what I have read on the forums. The rest of it, wind noise, lousy stereo, rear wiper, etc I think are personnel likes and dislikes or ones’ tolerance levels or expectations.

All said, I find this site interesting, funny, informative, “you have to be kidding” and something I look forward to reading every day.

I don't know that I would have paid much attention to the wind noise if I hadn't heard about it here - the thud definitely (mine goes to the dealer for that on the 14th - he says he has 3 SB's on that problem), but this site kept my sanity while I waited & waited & waited for my MDX. I may not post very often because much of what I think about my MDX has already been discussed, but I read the new posts every day and thoroughly enjoy the posts and the "regulars" on this site. . . .
- and I LOVE MY MDX! :D :D :D

Gary:
Just so you know, there is a single Acura TSB for 'the thud'-type issues with three potential problems/fixes on the single TSB. Tim can fax you a copy if you'd like to look at it before your rig heads into the shop. I found it interesting and plan to talk it over with the guys when I bring our baby in later this week.

Happy Trails.

1st to GHM,
Everytime I see your posts I want to crank up a rush cd .. AND I walked out to get something out of my truck today and it was moved to another parking spot and it threw up green slime all over. I called a priest a rabbi and an alter boy for help. :P

Husker,
Have you ever been through so much that you tell yourself that nothing is going to bother you for just one day. That was the day! Thank god that dealer did nothing to the way the thing drives, they only screwed up the motor and some scratches dings and dents.

TECK!

Unfortunately, yes I would. I can hear the thud, the squeaky sunroof and now a new noise that it started making above the glove compartment. I still love my MDX, but I can't stand these noises. I need to get them fixed and soon. If they tell me I have to live with them again, I'll cry. We just got back from a long weekend trip and if your on a smooth road you don't hear them, but where I live in Illinois the roads aren't smooth. So I'll be taking it back soon.

Don't sell yourself short, my man, you forgot to mention the (was it black?) residue spewed throughout the interior AND the 'dealer-installed-at-no-cost-to-you!' bolt/screw/whatever. And those are just the two i can recall at this moment.

Re the music: I highly recommend it! our 3 month old loves it, especially the late 70's-early '80s tunes that last 10-15-25 minutes each (yes, 2112 included).

Re your P'd MDX: was it spinning? And what in the world did the engine sound like? A little...ummmm.. throaty perhaps? LMAO!:D :D :D

May your 'one day' of bother-less-ness last a lifetime.

Happy Trails.

GHM .. does the G stand for Getty? Anyway .. I know I should not sell myself short but Im sure everyone is sick and tired of hearing about my truck and its problems. I will have my " Day " on the stand here shortly. I have still got the BBB case moving along and I wish I could tape the conference call with Acura and let everyone hear it. Maybe I can work a deal to get a White 2002 loaded up for a bargain.

TECK!

OT: Just got the Bose system for home and its awesome!!!

Thud and the weeping mirrors are two things that this forum sensitized me to or may not have noticed. The pillar nicks definitely would have not noticed them without reading here first. Another problem is my driver seat makes a noise on right turns. This problem was sighted by another member so it confirmed that I wasn't imagining things. My front and now rear suspension creaks which I would have noticed but I doubt this is the thud everyone is citing. Bottom line is the forum did alert me to a several problems I wouldn't have notice, confirmed another one.

Another interesting question is with the TSB out on the thud will Acura dealers automatically check for it and fix it whether prompted by the owner or not. Maybe we ought to consider what American Airlines does with their statused frequent flyers who get stickers saying "Someone Special" that a person can give to a flight attendant or gate agent that has provided exceptional service. These people in turn receive some type of bonus from AA for getting these. We already have the acuramdx.org stickers maybe some type of handout that says "Certified Thudologist" or "Thanks for the exceptional service" would be in order. Since ACS doesn't seem to be doing the best job these days of encouraging dealers to provide the best service, may we can do something to move the process along. Just an idea, so what do some of the rest of you think?

I have noticed thud about a week after I took delivery of my car (early January) and, at that time, I can "proudly" :( say I was one of (if not THE) first people on this site voicing my concern. I also mentioned a higher level of wind noise than what I was used to driving my previous cars. Early reactions to my observations varied from quiet skeptisism to open bashing and ridicule. One of the most common suggestions (so much prefered in the early going by none other that REMERY himself! :)) was to crank up the volume on the stereo.

I was quite discouraged by those remarks as well as by a very surprized and downright "ARE YOU FOR REAL" attitude from my dealer, especially when I failed to replicate thud during a test drive with a tech rep.

Well, I feel kind of "vindicated" now as far the thud is concerned. Since it is still NOT fixed, I am not a happy camper and really contemplate a lemon action or something similar if my upcoming visit to a dealer (and an Acura engineer being present there) will produce no results.

Wind noise - I learned to live with it and during my recent 65+mph trips I did not "notice" it.

Weeping mirrors - I do not like the streaks, my hand, lower arm got "washed" rather thoroughly only once. I would like to have it fixed eventually. One gotta be blind not to notice it! I guess if a guy has enough $$$ to by 2 MDXs, he would not be as keen to look for any "imperfections" as someone who paid more than 15K for the first time in his life.

Pillar nicks was something remery and Dmor mentioned. I see them, I do take precautions releasing my seatbelt, but that's about it. This is one thing I would NEVER have noticed if not for this board.

I am pleased to see that my solution cured both wind noise problems - yours and the MDXs!;) ;)

I'm in the same boat as elf89. I found this site this past April, but I just brought home my MDX last week. This site has definitely raised my knowledge of the MDX, and made me aware of what to look out for when it came to problems. Many of the problems I have seen mentioned were ones that I knew wouldn't bother me, so I wasn't worried about those. But there were others, such as the Thud, for which I was on the lookout, but which I haven't experienced (yet).
msu79gt82
I too knew all about the major problems before we bought the MDX and bought it anyway - there is really nothing to compare with it:D :D Fortuneately the only problem we have faced is the weeping mirrors. This is a unique enough (and annoying enough) problem that we would have noticed it before reading about it.
slash007
I noticed the weeping mirrors on my own, and then came to the board for confirmation. The same also with the thud and piller nicks.

I forgot about that one. Thanks to this forum we do not have that problem, because we learned about it before we picked up the MDX and have trained ourselves to hold the belt and guide it back. Yep it is now a habit - hold onto the belt; do not let it flop back!

I actually found this site because I was having problems discussed in the bulletin boards. I have not had the Thud or the Weepy mirrors, but the tire problems really got me pissed off. Again, people that don't know about these problems seem to ignore them. However, those of us in the forum and in the know are more aware of our autos....
