My MDX is in the shop today with a transmission needing replacement. Original quote is $3900 my expense. Has 89,000 miles on it. They then said they would pay parts and charge me $1,100 labor. Then they changed that and said they would also charge me for a ECU computer charging me $800 additional. They said without the computer, the transmission warranty of 3 years/36 would be void. Then they said they would cover the cost of the computer (after telling them I had been online and others paid 0 for the repair).
Any suggestions on this? Does this sound fair? They said when I mentioned the Goodwill/freewill program, that that was only for customers getting service there routinely. |

| It sounds like they are extending goodwill already by covering the parts for you. If you are still not satisfied, you should call Acura corporate and have a case manager review it. |

| It doesn't make sense for an Acura transmission to fail anyway, but that's as fair a deal for that mileage I would think. |

Say what? 2001-2002 MDX transmissions have been failing a lot. Consumer Reports even shows the dreaded "black dot" for 2001-2002 transmissions.
The previous-gen TL's (and CL's) had transmissions that failed so frequently Acura had to offer a 100k extended warranty for the transmissions.
So is it a fair deal? Considering that Acura should also extend the MDX's transmission warranty to 100k, it stinks.
I'd try to, very politely, try to escalate to the next level. |

That is exactly my point - Acura transmissions shouldn't fail, but they have. What does "a lot" mean? The only logical guess is at least 3% based on the statistics reported by owners to CR - the black dot you are referring to.
So, to answer the OP's question, no it's not fair that you have to pony up for an engineering flaw but is it fair AT THIS POINT IN TIME, given the mileage, the fact that the original warranty expired (which should be extended but hasn't been yet) and that the current owner has not had it serviced at that particular dealer - MAYBE. |

"A lot" is based in part on CR's own stats, which are much worse than vehicles without alleged transmission issues. It's also based on posts on this system over the last few years.
We'll just have to disagree on "what's fair." Like you said, it's an engineering flaw. It shouldn't matter whether the current owner has had it serviced at that particular dealership. He's well within the 100k miles that is customary of transmission extensions for the TL/CL and other problematic Hondas.
People buy Hondas because they're reliable. If the vehicles aren't, then Honda has to step up to the plate and not force its customers to plead their case with regional reps. They've already done this with the other vehicles with problem trannies. |

My daughter just got a letter from Honda stating that the warranty on her 2001 transmission was EXTENDED to 109,000 miles!
Others should have recived a similar letter by now. |

| Was this letter for a 2001 MDX? Does the letter specify only for 2001 MDX, or does it include the 2002 MDX or VIN ranges? |

MDXanyone,
Are you sure this wasn't a letter about a lawsuit to extend the current 100K warranty to 109K? I have received one of those letters but I seem to recall the matter would not be worked out until next spring. It would be great if they extended it another 9k/9 months. I could keep our TL another 9 months! |

| Regardless of mileage, I think it's ridiculous that a $40k vehicle would toss a tranny at 89k miles. That's just crazy! So if the motor blew up at 89k, would we say - eh, it's been a few years, 89k miles. It had it coming? Please. . . EVERY car manufacturer should have a 10 year/100k warranty at this point. |

I do not believe that the MDX was not included in that extension. |
