OK. I’ve read many different scenarios on this forum and I’m very glad it exists. I have a similar noise, clunk, thud, or whatever; but not exactly the same. I will try to describe this as precisely as possible so Supertech and others have as much info as possible.

The noise happens ONLY when faster then normal acceleration occurs from a complete stop. It sounds like someone is under the hood with a small pall peen hammer and they are hitting the firewall with enough force that you hear and feel it but you still feel comfortable enough to drive the MDX.

This noise also happens when you are driving relatively slow(less than 10-15Mph) and have to apply the brakes in a sudden or reactionary like motion. If you are driving at a higher rate of speed the noise will NOT occur even if you apply the brakes with HIGH amount of force like in an emergency. ONLY LOW SPEEDS.

If the vehicle is put in reverse from a complete stop at a slow rate of speed (less than 1-2 Mph) and you turn the wheel all the way left or right there is a sound as if a child attaches a playing card to a bicycle wheel to create a motorcycle sound but actually sounds more like a roulette wheel.

I think the two issues are related, but I have had White Bear Acura, and Bloomington Acura look at the vehicle with no success. White Bear Acura did replace the front springs and one of the upper strut bearing/bushings per TSB with no success at ridding the vehicle of this noise.

Any suggestions? I’ve had 5 garages lift it and check for ANY loose sway bar link, bushing, gas tank, caliper bolts, motor mounts, rack-n-pinion mount, etc.

It’s a real disappointment to me personally because I have been driving Honda products since 1982 religiously without any issue that couldn’t be resolved. I’ve been told “it’s not a safety issue or we would have found it. It’s more of an annoyance.” The thing that seems really weird to me is that they haven’t fixed it yet after 5 or 6 years now.

I would look into the CV joints for the roulette wheel sound. And a related thing could be the intermediate axle shaft mounting bolts could be loose.

One check that could be done fairly easy is to rule out the engine mounts. Put it in gear, and press the brake as hard as you can. With the hood up, have someone watch the engine while you quickly give the gas pedal a jab. If the engine moves a lot and looks like it does so harshly (especially if you feel a thud inside)...your front mount is probably gone. And the front mount is something that is pretty much almost guaranteed to fail on an MDX before 100k miles.
