Wow, I just stumbled across this website. Where have you been my whole life... :)
It seems after doing a search that this is a common problem with the MDX, but I threw a bunch of codes today. Rather my wife frantically called me stating the car was running like crap and the check engine/VTM-4 lights came on. My first thought was I would pull the plugs and check them. All clean and still gapped correctly. Figured I would change them anyway since I was there. No changes...so I decided to google. This brought me here. After seeing all the EGR problems I pulled mine and it seems a little carboned up. I decide to try and test it. I block off the ports and start the car. Had my wife brake check while accelerating and decellerating to see if the valve opens & closes. Nothing happens. Is this a safe way to assume its not working or should I do some form of other test before purchasing a new EGR.
Side note...threw codes P0300, P0301, P0304
Since it also threw the random misfire code I can't believe my problem is associated with coil packs or something.
If it matters the wife drove the car for 40 minutes...parked for 30-45 minutes to SHOP :( and then went back to the car and it was running like crap.
Thanks for any help,
Don |

| It would help if you post the year, model and mileage of your MDX. There was an EGR valve recall/extension last year for 2001 and 2002. And welcome aboard! |

Sorry for the unfortunate events of your :welcome:.
Looks like you did a search on it already, but it sounds like you do need a new EGR valve. BTW, what year is your X? |

Sorry, I did forget to mention it is a 2001 with 90k on it. I bought it with 60k and haven't ever replaced the EGR since I've had it.
I will add a signature so I don't have this dillemma again :)

Yeah... you might want to look into that EGR replaced asap before the other cylinders starts misfiring. |

Well it wasn't the EGR valve :(
I will be taking it in to Acura in the morning...and update when I know more. |

Well here is the update. I drove it to the Acura dealer the next morning and it was still doing the same thing. The dealer said they cleared the codes and couldn't recreate the problem and it was running fine.
Doesn't make sense, but for now I won't complain. Maybe it was the EGR and I stupidly didn't plug it in all the way or something. I guess time will tell. I will wait and see.
Thanks again for everyone's help.

| I had the check engine light problem back in may/june of this year and at first no codes were showing up and they were blaming the problem on the ethanol that is contained in the gas. About a month later it started riding rough and I took it back. The misfiring codes came up and they told me they had to replace the fuel injectors. They did and I have not had any problems since. Running very smoothly. I read another thread in this website in which the fuel injectors were replaced but the problem persisted. Don't know what to make of that one. I thought I'd mention this as just another possibility. Good luck! |

| What type of gas are you using (both grade and what brand of fuel)? |

| I use Shell or Speedway Premium only. I haven't had any problems since I picked it up. I have to believe it was the EGR and I must not have plugged it in all the way or something. I am just to afraid to put the old one back in. I'll just wait and see. |
