a loud repeatable noise after breaking. - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a loud, repeatable noise each time i hit the breaks from the rear of my 1 month old 06 mdx.
I brought it to the dealer and they told me this is a "characteristic" of the vehicle! What a belony. They than handed me a Service News from 2001 identifying the problem as "Some Brake Click is Normal".

Let me tell you, there is nothing normal about the noise I get, it is very annoying especially in traffic, every time i stop something is hammering underneath my car.

This is fix from the Service News: "Remove the pads from the caliper brackets, and shim the ends of the backing plates with cut-up business card until you can reinstall the pads snugly in the brackets. Have you customer drive the vehicle, and if they can't hear any clicking for a while, you're proven your point"

Really what is the point of fixing the noise with a cut-up paper! This is definitely a defect that acura need to acknowledge and issue a recall.

I am very disappointed in acura. This will be my last honda/acura and I won't let my friends and family by one in the future.

I appreciate to know if anyone got a fix for this problem. At this point I am willing to pay for a third party solution.

THe dealer is incompetently quoting the fix for the "brake clunk" on generation 1 MDX's. THis arose only when changing directions from reverse ot forward and back again. The calipers would click or clunk as they reseated.
THe issue was mostly fixed by '04 or 05, when Acura put the shims in during production. FOr a dealer to bring this up on an 07 (and an 07 driving in one direction when it's happening) is plainly BS.

He said that the noise occured when He " have a loud, repeatable noise each time i hit the breaks from the rear of my 1 month old 06 mdx"

Note it is an 06.

I am not sure what you mean by "hit the breakes from the rear."

Does this mean when you are braking while backing up? Please explain.

G. Colton:
What I meant is the noise is coming from the rear of the car, I am only going in one direction, as you do in stop-n-go traffic.

I have the same problem, mine is a 2007 MDX with 3k miles, so if you could let me know if there is a fix for the break clunk, it drive me nuts that I paid almost US$ 50k for a full feature luxury car to have this kind of noises...it's embarrasing (and yes I am glad to see that at least this is not a safety issue).

Is it possible he is hearing the gas tank slosh?
asalkeld
I do not think so because when I break I feel like it was mentioned in the post 'something is hammering underneath my car' , but I'll let the gast tank be used and post back once I have run the same test with the car and almost no gas to see if it happens again, so again this is the brand new 07 MDX that is what bothers me, you would think by know they would know if this is a problem and had fixed it...
asalkeld
Well, as I let the gas be used .. I though I would report back ,..., now using the car with the tank 1/2 empty, I can not hear the noise , so I am now thinking I do have the gas slosh issue. I am going to now monitor the noise with full tank, 3/4, 1/2 etc and will report back to the community. I still do not understand how a liquid moving in a tank can sound as someone hammering in the bottom of the car, but I guess I'll leave that problem to the people that love to study fluid dynamics and stuff and there are people that study this stuff http://www.stoneman.co.uk/fuelpayload.html

I have this same noise on my 07 and it is at the dealer as of yesterday for it. Have not heard back and will follow up.

I do notthink I have the slosh as I have driven the car more I have come to think I have two problems

1. A 'click' that happens when I break, like something is sliding and clicks. I drove it to the dealer today, they say it is NOT the brreaks.. we will see

2. Some different noise when I turn right, something maybe related to the struts (so the mechanic said at the dealership)

I will report back after they fix it atthe dealer (so I hope..)

I just came back from the dealer and basically they hear the noise all right, they agree they have a problem but after working for 4 days on the car and with Acura tech support, they basically can not find the source or a way to fix it. They have asked me to have patience and that they will contact the acura Florida tech rep so we can make another appointment for him to hear it and work with the factory to figure out the problem. This is very frustrating but I am stuck, I need to make 3 attepmts to fix it and if I do not succeed then the only other option is to lemon-law the MDX. By the way the dealer says they drove the car with special microphones and all but they can not pinpoint the noise, basically we know that when I break, it 'clicks' somewhere in the front. Remember this is a brand new 2007 MDX

Ok, this time with the help of a visiting Acura Factory technical expert they discovered the problem, they said it was 'the bushings' and it was a lot of work to fix, I am sure glad they did!, now rides quiet, no noises

Hello All,

This is my very first Post in this forum. I'm glad to hear others have heard this clucking noise. I too have heard it during breaking but it only happens about 25% of the time. Sounds like hammering under the driver's side front seat.

I will take it in this week.

Thanks asalkeld. Only 3K on my 2007 mdx.

2007 MDX – 3k miles – We have noticed a distinct clicking noise while braking and accelerating from a dead stop. The noise seems to come from the front of the car. We have convinced ourselves it is brakes or suspension or the four wheel drive system. The car will go to the dealer this week.

We are also experiencing wind “whistle” on the passenger side front door.

Does not inspire a lot of confidence. Car does not have the same quality as my 2001 RX. Acura shame on you!

I hate to say it but I never updated the forum, the 'fix' was short lived and the 'clicking' noise is back and I have pretty much given up on this 'flaw' as I do like many of the other nice things about the car, but as you may imagine I do get mad every time I hear it, so if some mechanich somewhere finds the real source of this I would love to hear back so I can get mine fixed

if your clunk happens while turning the wheel, have the tech check the power steering box bolts.

we have had the noise since we bought the truck back in october, even drove to florida and back (2000 miles), the first time we took it in the tech said "brake slap, nothing we can do"

well the clunk was getting worse, and since the x needed an oil change anyways i asked the tech again about the clunk when i dropped it off in the morning

he came back at the end of the day and said that it was the trailer hitch in the storage well in the back (yeah right!! that's why the horrible noise is coming from the left front wheel)

so i got them to get the tech and go for a test drive... i rolled the truck forward, put it in park and started sawing the wheel back and forth.... loud clunks repeatedly coming from the front wheel!

the service advisor was standing by the truck also and the look fo shock on his face was priceless, he said that he had never heard something sound that bad.

turns out it was the bolts that hold the power steering box to the frame..... WTF? tech said that this is the first one to ever have this problem

gee that's a comforting feeling knowing we drove 4000 miles so far and the box could have fallen off at any time... especially at 80mph + on the highway

long story short, have them check those bolts
