Another "Clunking Noise" when braking - Click HERE for Original Thread

After MDX is parked, I go to reverse to back up and slowly hit the brakes -----> a medium "CLUNK" noise I hear, then I drive forward and again on my initial stop I hit the brakes -----> a fairly loud "CLUNK" noise I will hear. This happens everytime after the MDX has been parked and only at the initial braking. It sounds like the brake calipers are engaging - but with a loud clunking noise that don't sound normal to me.
Does anyone else have this problem or "braking clunk noise"?

My guess is that what you're hearing is normal. With cars that have disc rotors as large as the MDX, at all four corners, it isn't unusual to hear the loud clunking until the pads warm up and the moisture on the rotors has been burned off. Basically, the pads are shifting slightly b/c there a still a little "grabby" (there is a joke in there somewhere).

Basically it is similiar to the following:

Brake Grining Noise

Ok, I meant:

"they *are* still a little "grabby""

and

"Brake *Grinding* Noise"

So if this is normal, are you saying Donsev, or anyone else, that you also hear the brake clunking noise on your MDX everyday, after its been parked and at the initial braking?

I noticed the same thing and was told by the Acura Regional Service rep. that this is "normal" as brake pads after 199x all have some sort of metal in them. I can't recall the exact year, but he actually heard the noise in question, when driving my MDX.

Yes, on the MDX as well as Lexus IS300 and RX300.

But please, if this noise seems to loud, or changes in any way, have the service department look at it. I wouldn't want you to ignore a real problem.

I have the same clunk noise when I just start to go forward or reverse. I am told by Acura that this has something to do with the gas tank. I told them that it doesn't sound like a slushing sound. I think it may have a problem with the baffles in the tank. They said they have no fix for it yet.

I have a creaking noise that has become more prominent is the past month in the rear. I will test the brake "grabby" pad theory before I take it to the dealer to fix. I am aware of the noise more upon initial start up so it just might be the problem.

... material in the new 2002 TLs. The material was too hard and was causing the rotor to warp. The TSB involves replacing the pads and turning the rotors. Perhaps there is a similar problem here?

I also have a clunking noise when turning the wheel and braking at <5mph.

The dealership has been diligently trying to fix it numerous times, including enlisting the assistance of the factory service rep, but unfortunately no fix yet.

They've tried the thud fixes, adjusting the brakes, etc, but it hasn't worked.

They've definitely been very good about trying to come up with a fix, but it is still frustrating to have to keep bringing it in.

MDXtasy,

My MDX has the exact same brake shifting "clunk" noise. I went to the dealor shop and asked a technician to sit next to me while I drive to reproduce the problem. He said the noise is from calipers and is normal (think a lot customers asked the same question). All the other acuras more or less have the same noise. They wouldn't fix it. What else can I do? Live as it's even I hate it.

always49,

When I took it to dealer for the "thud" fix they were not able to duplicate the "clunking brakes" and before I left the shop I did the same thing you did by duplicating the noise with my service rep and finally he heard the obvious. He suggested I take it back (which I have'nt done yet) and leave it overnight so as the MDX will sit on the parking lot for a while and that the prolonged parking will dupe the noise-then he'll have the technician inspect.

I suggest you insist to have your dealer check it (specially if it's initially loud like mine), if not go to another dealer. This is why we have warranty on our cars.

I have the same clunking in the rear when braking or accelerating after braking (the MDX never stopped). The tech did inspect everything and said they are all OK. The service guy said it is normal due to the settling of the brake caliper and pad when braking. The dealer said all Acura did it. Since this is my first Acura, I just wonder if it is true (another hidden feature).
