Hi all,

I'm new to this site, so I hope you're all friendly here. There was some painting going on at work last week and when washing my car (05 MDX Black) this weekend, I found all these white dots on my car (including windows). :(

I got some of them off, but I figure there's gotta be some product out there that easily removes this stuff. Any suggestions!!

Thanks in advance!! :D

Deez

PS. I'm going to see if the painting company will pay for a detailer. This is my back up plan.

This should be your first plan to remedy the overspray on your MDX. Make sure you have documented the date, time, and location of the incident when you confront the painting company.:4:

ABSOLUTELY follow this advise!!! DO NOT try to get rid of this overspray yourself.

If you do not know what you are doing, you can do permanent damage. Get a profossional!!!

Certainly see if they'll have it detailed, but even that worries me a little - what corners will they cut and how cheap will they attempt it. Have your OWN detailer do it, if you have one - or find one.

With that said, I've usually had very good luck with clay bars removing overspray if it's recent, and I have yet to find someone damage their car with clay (Unless you drop it and keep using it!)

Soapy water and a clay bar.

I do not know that I would be calling a DETAILER a professional in regard to paint overspray.

Talk to/use a personal who is a professional in regards to paint, paint products and overspray in general. This is probably one of the better body shops in your area.

Above all, remember to get this documented!!!!

Thanks for all the good advice.

It wasn't clear, but the first plan was to talk to the painter.

The backup plan would be to clean it off myself.

I've talked to my company representative about it and he is going to talk to the contractor's manager (currently out on vacation).

I'll make sure to document the date and time and any other work.

Oh yeah, I've been reading the threads about Zaino and will probably try some of that product as well once I get the overspray off the car. I bought the 05 MDX used and it looked really shiny when I got it.

I think the previous owner might even be on these boards somewhere.

There are overspray removal companies that specialize in this type of repair. It happens all the time. An auto body shop can do it as well.
Don't forget that this may be considered an insurable loss under your comprehensive coverage. I would, however, write a letter to the company, include an estimate, and nicely require they pay.
If the overspray is limited, Ron Sully's suggestion of a claybar will work wonders if you do it yourself.

Small world?

Wow!
He bought my 05 MDX that was ZAINOFIED big time with all the accessories from Tim.....and now the body shop fooked it up.....What a bunch of idiots they are !

Here is a shot of it in during my ownership of 12 months if that....:1:

Well, I got the contractor to pay for cleaning of the overspray, just need to find a worthy body shop/detailer down the peninsula near San Carlos. Anybody know of any?

Sorry Fab, it wasn't my fault! :D I'm going to take pictures this weekend of the car before the detailers get to it. I won't have time to take it in until next week at the earliest.

I'll do my best to keep it Zaino'd. So, what was your Zaino program for this car? Or should I start fresh after the detailers are done with cleaning it? (i.e. Dawn, then Zaino stuff).

I'm a novice to detailing, which is why I find these boards very educational. My old car, a Honda Prelude was white and didn't really need much exterior upkeep.

buy Z7, Z5 and Z6 or buy the kit and start over, dawn and so on......

Did you get my "lay of the land" email ? :1:
DeezMDX05
Yes, I did!!

Lots of information

I'll reply soon....
Fabvsix
Also I forgot it was "hand washed" 100% by me weekly! It NEVER saw a car wash of ANY kind........if you see spider webs don't blame me ! :( I also did a zaino pc porter job, that's why it has that nice Z shine....

Here is the mirror shot....

That's what I figured...the washers at Acura of Pleasanton did not take as much care as you b/c there were some "swirls" etc on the paint. I don't know how often they washed it but I'm sure you didn't create any blemishes on the coat :2:

If you sold around Nov 30, I bought around Dec. 22, so that's about 3 weeks worth of washes from the dealer...

There was a "chip" on the rear spoiler. How it got there, who knows. There was also a small tear in one of the third row headsets.

BTW, the accessories were a really nice touch....very slick....I suppose you didn't have a cargo cover with it did U? I need to get one...

Actually those 5 large headrest were bought for my 03 and tranfered to my 05 (yours now). The tear was made by the idiot body shop. The history is my 03 was broadsided by some jacka$$, so I have Acura of Pleasanton send it to their body shop, then traded it for the 05. Here is a shot of my 03 that was barely a year old and LIKE NEW ! This happened three blocks from my house !
DeezMDX05
Daaaaaang.....

At least we know that an MDX can take a hit!!
Fabvsix
Oh the insurance company repaired it in the tune of $9,800.00 and was told by my connections it would not be the same. They had to replace the entire rear end underneath.......I demanded OEM so the person who bought it at least got a dealership, reputable body shop and OEM parts but she had rattles to name a few, so I traded it for the 05 you bought.....Here's the jacka$$ moron's boat that plowed into me minding my own business at a red light....beware of those turds.....:1:

You should ask your question over in a detailing forum like detailcity.org. The best advice will come from someone who details cars and restores finishes on a daily basis, not someone whose detailing experience is limited to wiping on a coat of Zaino once every three months.

The general rule when restoring a finish is to start mild and go to something stronger only when needed. For removing overspray, that means starting with a fine clay, then moving on to a medium clay, and then abrasive compounds and then solvents (last resort) when/if needed.

If you just go over to detailcity.org and do a search for threads with "overspray" in the title you'll get a lot of good information.

Common sense allows someone who been at this for the past 6 years to know what I'm doing. I've never claimed to be an expert. Are you Jhue ???????????????????????:1:

My comments were not aimed specifically at you, though if you must know, my opinion is that you do not possess sufficient knowledge or experience to be handing out advice on this subject.

I don't consider myself an expert, just a weekend enthusiast, but I do know when more knowlegeable sources than myself should be consulted.

jhue,
You should probably look at the care that Fabvsix has lavished on his three MDX's before you go too much further.
Fabvsix
Thank you Shootist !

Just a reminder that ALL of my current or past vehicle we given to me "off the truck" and brought home and HAND washed/wax during ownership. NONE ever saw a car wash, or were allowed to be washed by the dealership or saw any body shops ! 100% ZAINOED by my hands in my drive way! You can ask my neighbors too !

I doubt that DeezMDX needs to be seen by a surgeon to clay it with all those fancy clay bars you mentioned......Infact I'll bet you lunch that the body shop taking care of their CARELESS actions will fook it all up with lovely spider webs in the clearcoat because they don't care!
DeezMDX05
Hey, play nice guys, I was just soliciting advice from my fellow X'ers. I'll check out detail.org as jhue suggested. I need to find somewhere local to do the work. The painting contractor agreed to pay for the removal of the overspray, so I'll be going to a "professional" to do the work. After they're done, I'll hit it with the Zaino to remove any spider webs, swirls, etc.

I just had to get that off my chest......Call Acura of Pleasanton. Ask the receiptionist of the name of the body shop they use MOST of the time. They did excellent work on my 03 that was broadsided.....Heicenda body shop or something like that. Its not too far from the dealership and they have been in business for many years...family owned and operated....
DeezMDX05
I work in San Carlos and I don't want to go that far to get it cleaned up.

I'm surprised that the Zaino zealots aren't all over Sal's announcements of Zaino Clear Seal and Zaino All-In-One. It's week-old news on many other forums.
Fabvsix
Hey can't help that "not all shoes fit....."
