Help! Scratch down the rear bumper! - Click HERE for Original Thread

OK, I realize that my new X won't remain flawless forever, but heck I've only had it three weeks and (stupid me) I parked a hair too close to the garage door, which when it came down, ran a nice vertical scratch down the middle of my rear bumper.

The X is steel blue, Sport edition, so the bumper is the charcoal gray plastic version. I'm not sure if I can try to paint that or possibly sand it out - ultimately afraid I may worsen the look.

I have to take it into the dealer in a couple of days to have the roof rails and crossbars installed, so I can ask there, but I thought I'd see if any one would be knowledgeable on possible remedies.

sobrien1087,

Take your MDX to a reputable auto body shop. Have the bumper sanded and painted. Without seeing pics of your damage, I'm estimating $300 should make your ride look as good as new. Just be more careful next time.

I have the exact same scratch that you have. It is really more a gouge than a scratch. To go along with that I how have one on each side of it when I slid out a bathroom vanity for a condo I am remodeling. Personally I do not think that rear bumpers are that critical in the looks department. I certainly am not going to spend $300 to fix it. At least the new marks are still within the black. The garage door got down to the white.

I fell somewhere between with my scratch. Fortunately it wasn't too deep so that it became totally white.
I actually was able to take a pencil to it this morning, so that it's only noticeable when you get down right on top of it. Since I know the graphite from the pencil will wear away after the next wash, I'm going to try a trick I learned in my architecture career, and spray a light coat of fixative (usually used to create a clear matte finish over charcoal renderings). Hopefully that will cover my butt, and avoid any costly solutions in the body shop.

If it's white then you got off easily, it just scratched the clear coat.

Get some Scratch X from Meguiars and it should help lessen it, not totally remove it, but lessen it. I too had the infamous Garage gouge which I call it. Look around when you are driving especially in the burbs and you'll see it on other car's bumpers. BTW when Tim still shipped bumpers I just got a new one painted vs having it done at a body shop.

This is an 07, right? It sounds like the scratch is not in the Steel Blue portion of the bumper, but it's in the gray plastic, unpainted portion?
If so, those are difficult to repair- they're slighly textured so they can't be sanded. You may find a product to re-color the gouge, but you''ll still have the gouge.
Manufacturers put this type of plastic on bumpers as a 'throw away' for quick and easy replacment after parking damages. I;m going to suggest that you see if you can DIY, and order the part from Tim. You'll have to find someone with a Service Manual to tell you if you can take that piece off without disassembling the vehicle.
If not, it may be auto body shop time.

Sorry to hear that.

Same kind of thing happened to my brand new BMW 530i. Me and my son went into garage one day, I forgot to press garage opener button on wall, realized that while walking and sitting inside the car, opended the garage door thru car and was looking at my son who is putting on shoes and backed up!!! Timing, I forgot I just pressed the garage opener!!!

BANG BANG A SON WITH WIERD LOOK ON FACE LOOKING AT YOU!!!

This is the same idea I had in my thoughts like "who would do this or how many would do this?" My turn that day!!!

Door was just at the brink of my trunc lip, it went out little, trunc lip got a small dent as one of the door hinges touched it. No more scratches. Mostly lucky.

I had this push to put trunc spoiler once I got the car, but, then skipped. Now the time came, I got a 530i AC Style Trunc Lip spoiler and put it on myself, it used Synthetic Adhesive to put on, covered the dent, gave me a new look.

Just for $10, I fixed garage door bottom guidance roller hinge that broke, back in business!!!

Yes, it's an '07 Sport. Actually the entire bumper is gray plastic. Fortunately the scratch was fairly superficial and I've been able to mask it fairly well with graphite. We'll see how it holds up. I won't lose sleep over it, and I doubt if anyone would even notice, unless pointed out, but I'll always know it's there. Oh well, perfection can't last forever I guess...

Taking it in on Monday to have the roof rails put on. The dealer is also swapping out the leather on the driver's seat, as I discovered some very minor tears in the perforated leather, which I know would continue to grow significant over time.

I also had a problem with the 3rd row passenger seat back catching on the rear cargo bay, which caused the pressboard backing to break in the corner and bend upward. The dealer is replacing that for me as well as a warranty item.

Once I get er back, I want to clean the X up and finally take some pictures for the gallery.
