Let me preface this with "I am fickle with cars". I have a 2006 RL in pristine condition that i can walk away from with MAYBE $500 in neg equity (at the most). I buy from the owner and the RL was my 4th Acura. I am looking at the MDX now just because. My wife drives a Sienna and we use it for ALL out of town trips. We travel at least once a month and take our 2 kids and 90lb lab everytime we go. For the big trips (beach week, etc) i dont think the MDX would be sufficient but for the normal monthly trips I think it would be nice to alternate vehicles and have some real luxury on these trips.
Has anyone compared the two vehicles? What do you think? Does the MDX have the keyless ignition/entry like the RL? Also, I'm a huge Pearl White/Parchment kinda guy....Does the parchment interior come with wood grain or is it that dark marble stuff? Thanks. |

Not that this makes me an expert, but I own an '06 RL and an '07 MDX. Each fills a particular transportation need for our family. I traded in our '04 TL for the RL because, after buying the new MDX, I wanted the features it had, in our second car. The X doesn't have keyless entry, but matches the other significant features that I wanted -- SH-AWD and Real Time Traffic, for instance. This is our 3rd MDX -- and we've been able to move a lot of stuff and people in each one. I added a roof rack and crossbars to the new one -- our previous MDXs had them. We have a soft side top carrier for longer trips. With four children, the MDX is what we needed for family use; the RL and, before that, the TL serves as our commuter car. (Better gas mileage). These two vehicles work for us -- reliable, powerful, and safe. BTW, the Parchment interior on our Aspen White Pearl MDX comes with something that Acura calls "simulated KOA wood-grained trim".

yahtzee,
I almost purchased a new 06 RL two weeks ago. It would have been an awesome deal but I finally realized that the RL isn't any bigger than our 01 TL and we would have lost trunk space! I am leaning towards the MDX now. The technologies between the two are similar. The RL is more luxurious but the MDX has so much more room which is what I need now. The MDX has heated rear seats which the RL does not. MPG in the city is the same but the RL is better on the highway. 0-60 times are very close and the difference is probably not noticeable. I would be interested to hear your perceptions when you compare/contrast the two vehicles. I could have received a great deal on the RL but in the end it really wouldn't have suited our needs.
Have you checked RL resale lately? It is pretty abysmal. Used 06s are going for mid 30s or so. Good luck with your decision. |

Went by a dealer today and browsed briefly at an MDX. Can not stand the zebra wood grain. The front end would take some getting used to. I honestly think i like the 2006 design better. I then called my buddy that owns the dealership that i buy from (not the one i visited) and he had been working some numbers. He agreed to $500 over invoice but i just couldnt do it. Believe I'll keep my RL for a little longer and hope that they do something with that interior and front end. |

Don't expect any "drastic front end changes" any time soon (4-5 years maybe) as Acura will stick to their design for at least 5 years. However, history wise, the 1st gen RL previously the Legend, remained similar in design for 8 years before the all new 05 RL came out.
I have an 04 RL. I also have the 07MDX Sport/Ent which is more advanced than the 04 RL. Is it better made? HELL no! Fit and Finish is "american looking" compared to my RL inside and out.....REAL wood to mention it.....JAPAN MADE/ASSEMBLED ! Either way you go they are both great vehicles.....:1: :1: The RL will go with me to my grave....its a keeper....:6: :10: :26: :finger: |

| I have a funny feeling that Acura regretted pricing the new RL so high. Sales have been poor. I wonder if they're moving the MDX back into the top dog slot at Acura. |
